Protect the air we breathe in Richmond and our surrounding counties!
Did you know that the proposed data center expansion in Varina will add an additional 370 BOX CAR sized diesel generators, on top of 544 generators and 11 cooling towers? This isn’t your papaw’s lil generator- they’re massive.
Currently, Virginia has 10,500 of these generators. According to a new piece in the Washington Post, operating all of these generators for even an hour a week creates the “same public health impact as five power plants”.
The consequences of accepting these generators? Breathing issues— asthma, heart conditions.
The QTS project claims that these generators will only be used as emergency back up power. In VA— where our grid is overburdened by the data center boom— an emergency could be a 90 degree day. We’ve already seen it happen once this May!
They say this expansion can’t be stopped because they have vested interest, but according to a Henrico County Code dug up by , industrial use must not “create any hazardous, objectionable mix or offensive conditions on neighboring lands because of odor, heat, glare, dust, smoke, noise, vibration, wastes, fire, or explosion”.
Do yall think a permit for 370 train car sized diesel generators should be approved? Or does it feel out of line with Henrico county code? Asking for a friend!
A big congratulations to the fine folks at for stopping the approval of a proposed mega data center in Hanover County. Beautiful grassroots organizing and showing us what’s possible!

HAVE YOU HEARD?
Our community fridge is lookin pretty friendly! Join us this Friday for hot dogs (veggie & meaty), popsicles, fizzy beverages and merriment as we celebrate the first stocking of the 15th street community fridge!
The design is top secret (unless you come to our building daily and have seen it being built 😉). Imagine: a beautiful wooden structure to keep the fridge, pantry & freezer protected from the elements, an awning to keep folks dry, space for harm reduction supplies, and some Sesame Street design references?
See y’all this Friday at 6pm!! Bring a food item to help stock!

Y’all are the very best! We’ve sold almost 50 of these shirts, a beautiful start to our action fund.
A coalition of concerned organizations & individuals in Richmond are coming together to push back against the rapid expansion & development of data centers surrounding Richmond.
These centers— such as the 1,200 acre mega data center coming to Varina- consume as much power as the entirety of Manhattan. Eastern Henrico has been building new municipal infrastructure to support our faltering water systems. How much of that badly needed infrastructure will be used for the 11 new cooling towers for this center?
We’re also looking at the center proposed for the old Azalea flea market site and a slew of data centers proposed for Chesterfield. They’re coming hard & fast and we need a robust public response.
Please share, consider buying a shirt or donate directly on our website (indicate that the donation is for the “action fund”).
As coalition efforts get off the ground, we’ll share more info for folks to tap in. 💝 thank you!!

Hi friends! Will you help us to establish an action fund to support local resistance against the rapid expansion of data centers in the Richmond area?
If ya buy a shirt, that money goes right into the fund and back out into the movement! Beautiful!
Why do data centers in Varina impact Richmond? Henrico data centers are being built to serve Richmond, specifically.
The expansion of the Varina data center, according to Henrico Development Authority Executive Director Anthony Romanello, “will require THE SAME ENERGY CONSUMPTION as all of Manhattan Island.” Holy smokes!!
As we witness Dominion’s merger with NextEra- we know that these data centers are going to have a huge economic impact on our communities.
Folks in Richmond are organizing quickly! Let’s help! Please share- and if you’d like to donate directly to the action fund instead of buying a shirt, you can make a donation on our site and include “for action fund”.
Big love & gratitude! The work is just beginning.
