What is confessional poetry?

For most contemporary critics, confessional poetry marked a revolution in poetic style as well as specific subject matter and the relationship between a poem’s speaker and self. Confessional poets wrote in direct, colloquial speech rhythms and used images that reflected intense psychological experiences, often culled from childhood or battles with mental illness or breakdown. They tended to utilize sequences, emphasizing connections between poems. They grounded their work in actual events, referred to real persons, and refused any metaphorical transformation of intimate details into universal symbols. -from The Poetry Foundation

Day Two: Robert Lowell, Skunk Hour

Day Three: W.D. Snodgrass Heart’s Needle

Day Four: Adrienne Rich, Diving into the Wreck

Day Five: Anne Sexton, Her Kind

Materials needed: notebook and writing utensil, reading materials provided.

Materials provided!

Come and make a notebook filled with your very own writing! We will learn how to bind our very own notebook—it’s easy! You can decorate it however you want. Then, we will have writing time to fill our book with stories, poems, or journaling and you’ll have the opportunity to share what you’ve written if you choose.

We will:

Make the book: measure paper, sew pages together, make cover, decorate!

Write whatever you feel inspired to! We will share at the end of class.

One of our executive director Bird’s FAVORITE parts of the job is working with college applicants on their essays! She loves helping young people find the meaningful and visionary elements that get them excited to write, and navigating the process of weaving those into a structurally sound narrative.
