Verity Speech & Debate Club students and parents all had a great time at the Colonial Classic Speech & Debate Tournament this past weekend. What an awesome bunch of students I am privileged to work with each week!

02/24/2020

It’s this Friday & Saturday! The Colonial Classic Tournament, Richmond's own 2-day homeschool speech & debate tournament. Students are polishing their speeches, parents are spiffing up all the tournament attire, and the organizers are praying and hoping for an abundance of kindhearted community members 18+ who will volunteer a few hours of time to serve as judges for these amazing young people. Training for judging all events will be provided on-site. The location is easy to find: Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian.

Ever wonder what the dress code terms “business casual” and “tournament / formal attire” actually look like? These photos actually do a decent job of showing examples. Can you spot the ones that are too casual for Verity meetings and CCofSE tournaments? Comment, please!

Another great year of Verity Speech & Debate Club is completed! We came, we ate, we read stories, we burned evidence, we quoted Scripture, and we partied on into the early evening. "This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes." -Ps. 118:23

Verity's way to end a fabulous year of speech & debate--we had a family party! Taco bowls, yummy desserts, followed by readers theatre presentations, burning all the old debate evidence, and lots of fun time to play and relax.

Fayetteville's tournament was a wonderful way for Verity Speech & Debate Club to wrap up the competition season 2018-19. I couldn't be prouder of each student & parent. Extra thanks goes to my friend, Elijah McGowan, who gave generously of his time and talents to assist with policy coaching.

Our Story

Clear thinking. Poise under pressure. Well-reasoned ideas. Listening objectively. Compassion for those with opposing opinions. Speaking winsomely and effectively. Winning and losing with grace. These are all goals many homeschooling parents want their children to develop. Since 2012 Verity Speech & Debate Club has been training students ages 5-18 and their parents to participate in the fun and educational activities commonly known as speech and debate.

From September-March we meet weekly to learn and practice new speaking skills. Verity coaches teach, encourage, and inspire. Parents attend, too, and learn right alongside their kids. Christian Communicators of the Southeast (ccofse.org/) provides annual tournaments where Verity students compete against other homeschooled students to prove and polish their reasoning, speaking, and life skills.

Your membership fee covers training for the whole family. (Scholarship help is available upon request.) League membership and nominal tournament fees are extra. Information about our league is available by visiting the CCofSE (ccofse.org/) website.

For more information and a registration form, please email head coach, Kathryn Shanks, at [email protected].
