Wednesday, February 9 -- “Wellness Wednesday”

An integral part of every team is the athletic trainers, doctors, and medical professionals who work to keep players safe and healthy. In many schools during the winter season, athletic trainers serve hundreds of athletes participating on our teams.

On most days, trainers prepare student-athletes for practice games, provide treatment and rehab for injured athletes, and work home games, which often extend late in the evening, and during the winter seasons, there are a lot of weekend events. Our athletic trainers put in many hours every day.

Since the pandemic started, many athletic trainers have taken on additional duties related to the daily monitoring of COVID. These responsibilities have added to the stress and hard work of this job.

Thank you to the athletic trainers, doctors, and other medical professionals for providing outstanding service to keep our athletes healthy, safe, and in the game. Please stop by your training room today and thank our trainers.

It's National Beach Day! If you or your athletes are exercising on the beach, keep these things in mind:
1️⃣ Soft sand shifts and moves, unlike hard floor surfaces. Your body will respond to the movement of sand by firing up muscles and tendons to create stability.
2️⃣ Your feet can get buried in the sand. This can cause your hip flexors to work harder to pull your knee up from deep in the sand, and pushing off can dig it even deeper.
☑️ Exercise on hard, wet sand and start with low resistance and low speed exercises. Gradually increasing the difficulty will help prevent injuries and reduce soreness or pain.

ACL REHAB: Hurry up and WAIT!

🔬The research is crystal clear on this, returning to playing sports earlier than 9 months after ACL surgery significantly increases your risk of suffering a re-tear!

‼️In fact, many researchers still recommend waiting until a full year after surgery to return to playing sports for most athletes below a professional level.

👉We need to remember what an ACL Reconstruction is. A surgeon is taking a portion of a tendon, usually from your hamstring or patella and replacing your ACL with it.

🙌Fortunately, we aren't relying on the tendon graft itself to immediately hold up as a functioning ACL.

💯A successful ACL reconstruction relies on your body's ability to incorporate the tendon graft into your knee and change the properties of that tendon into those of a ligament.

This requires two things:
1️⃣Time
2️⃣Gradual exposure to load

⏰So wait the 9-12 months, spend the time getting your leg as strong as humanly possible, and return to sport with confidence!
