Wow! What an 👏 AWESOME 👏 weekend our Comet 💫 Community had at this year’s 🇩🇪!! THANK YOU ❤️to all of our 💫 many parent and student volunteers for helping to make the 17th Annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest event a great success for Catholic education!! You gave generously of your time and sold tickets, checked id’s, entertained kiddos, rolled thousands of sauerkraut balls, grilled an endless stream of wursts, poured keg after keg of beer and bottle after bottle of wine, and baked hundreds upon hundreds of pretzels (and much more!) all with a smile 😊 on your face and a servant’s heart ❤️! We have THE BEST school family !! Thank you to for making this event possible!! We look forward to next year’s festival Sept 15-17, 2023!!

This morning celebrated its annual May Crowning in honor of Our Lady. Our Comets joined in the Mary Garden after Mass and brought beautiful flowers in veneration of our Blessed Mother and then processed through the neighborhood and back to school praying the Rosary and led by Father John David. 🌹

Ms. Howell’s 3rd graders visited the school garden to add their weekly compost to the bin. The children were amazed to see some decomposition of the fruits & veggies (they talked of the food chain - producers, consumers & decomposers). They also could hardly believe the softness of the rich dirt. One student commented, "it feels like cake!" We can’t wait to see the beautiful plants 🪴and flowers 💐 that spring from this wonderful soil!

Saint Benedict Catholic School: An exceptional Catholic, classical education for grades JK-8

Saint Benedict Catholic School is Richmond’s oldest parochial school, serving families since 1919. Throughout our rich history, Saint Benedict has brought together students from different cultures, backgrounds and neighborhoods, to learn – united as God's beautiful children.

At Saint Benedict, we strive to form the entire child:

Academically – We provide the only Catholic, classical curriculum in Richmond, which helps students understand the relationship between faith and reason – and how to think critically about the world around us in light of our Creator. This prepares them to be advanced learners in high school and college, where classically educated students score in the top 10-15 percent on college entrance exams.

Spiritually – We love our Catholic faith and welcome students of all faiths. We promote a love of God, a love of service and a love of learning in all we do, including weekly school Mass, the celebration of feast days, and an active prayer life that punctuates our school days and elevates children’s natural curiosity to God as their Creator.

Culturally – As a classical school, we believe an appreciation of the arts, music and classical literature is key to raising students' minds and hearts to that which is truly good and beautiful.

Physically – Our students benefit from daily recess, weekly PE, the availability of after school athletics and the promotion of giving our best to God and practicing good sportsmanship.

Morally – We love our House System that builds social skills and camaraderie across grades, while promoting virtue in a wonderful, small-school community.

Our History
Saint Benedict Parochial School is an outgrowth of the old Saint Mary School, which
was formerly located in downtown Richmond and was staffed by the Notre Dame
Sisters. In 1868, the Benedictine Sisters replaced the sisters of Notre Dame.
By 1884, there were approximately 217 children in Saint Mary Parochial School.

In 1919, on the corner of Grove and Belmont Avenues, Saint Benedict Parochial
School opened, with classes being held temporarily in the convent. Sister Edward
Galloway, O.S.B. was the first principal of the school, which replaced the old Saint
Mary School. The convent was moved in 1923, to make room for the proposed
school building. Excavation for the new building was begun immediately and was
completed in 1924. By the late 1940's, the school was no longer large enough to
accommodate the increasing number of students, so an addition was built in 1949.

Today, Saint Benedict Catholic School continues to offer a traditional education
in a faith-filled environment. Our graduates continue their education at local
Catholic high schools, specialty schools, Governor's school, or in the public school system.
Wherever they go, they take the legacy of academic excellence and Catholic
formation acquired at Saint Benedict.

Our Covid Response

When faced with the challenges of Covid-19, we took our school from classroom learning to distance learning in just 2 days and worked with our families to ensure that every student had access to a computer and the internet so we could keep our children learning, growing and sharing! The teamwork of our amazing Comet Family of faculty, families and students made it possible for our school to complete its 4th quarter curriculum for the 19/20 academic year. Our nimble, small school size and the dedication of our Comet Family makes this possible for our children! Our school continues to innovate in this space so we stand poised to adapt to whatever contingencies we face this Fall and in the future. At St. Benedict, we treasure the dignity of each child, and we do this by making sure they are getting the education they need and deserve, come what may in these unpredictable times.
