We are delighted to welcome our new Interim Head of School, Mr. Joshua McCroskey, to the Hunter community!
Mr. McCroskey brings more than a decade of experience in classical Christian education, with a strong background in campus administration and institutional leadership. He has previously served as Upper School Principal at Trinity Christian School in Kailua, Hawaii, and as Head of School at Ad Fontes Academy in Northern Virginia. Most recently, he has been serving as Chief of Staff at Veritas School right here in Richmond.
Mr. McCroskey has a deep commitment to the classical Christian tradition upon which Hunter was founded, and we are excited for the leadership, vision, and care he will bring to our community. We are eager to finish the year strong with Mr. McCroskey!

At Hunter, Easter reminds us of the hope, joy, and new life we have through Jesus Christ. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we give thanks for the promise that light overcomes darkness and life triumphs over death.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.’” — John 11:25
Wishing our Hunter families a blessed Easter filled with peace, joy, and the hope of Christ. ✝

When children are introduced to quality literature at a young age, they learn to delight in good stories and often develop a lifelong love of reading. At Hunter, our teachers enjoy guiding students through books that challenge the mind, shape virtue, and cultivate a love for what is true, good, and beautiful.
This month, our students are exploring a rich variety of texts. Kindergarteners proudly share that their main book is the Bible. First graders are enjoying classic fairy tales like "The Gingerbread Boy" and "Cinderella", while second graders are reading "Stuart Little" and bringing the story to life through creative projects.
Older students continue to grow as thoughtful readers—third graders are discussing themes in "The Sign of the Beaver," fourth graders are retelling the adventures of Robin Hood, and fifth graders are memorizing "Paul Revere’s Ride". Sixth graders are beginning "The Aeneid for Boys & Girls", and our Upper School students are diving into Shakespeare’s "Julius Caesar," even performing soliloquies and scenes in class.
At Hunter, reading is more than an assignment—it’s an opportunity to wonder, think deeply, and grow in wisdom.

Twice a year, Hunter grandparents lead our students in their morning chapel service with the goal of pointing their grandchildren and their grandchildren's classmates to life in Jesus. This week, we had the fun of welcoming close to 30 of our students' grandparents for this Grandparent-Led Chapel time. A team of grandparents guided the students through the Pledge of Allegiance, the Lord's Prayer, a reading from Matthew 13, and the Doxology, and one student's grandmother opened to the students the meaning of Jesus' Parable of the Sower.
She brought in four bowls containing the results of seeds she had planted in packed soil, rocky ground, thorny ground, and good soil. She prayed that we would not allow God's living, active Word to fall on any "thorns" or "rocks" in our own hearts but that instead the Holy Spirit would give us "good soil" in our hearts so that we will understand His precious Word and live by it.
Knowing that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10), we partner with parents and grandparents to root our students in Christ.

Thanks to snow and ice, we’ve been spending a little extra time inside, and turning it into hands-on learning magic!
It looks like:
-Kindergarteners drawing under their desks—because today, they’re Michelangelo, painting the Sistine Chapel.
-Second graders building plant cells with their own two hands, one nucleus and Golgi apparatus at a time.
-Fifth graders twisting pipe cleaners to see music theory come to life.
-Sixth graders watching science in action as hot and cold water reveal the secrets of heat transfer and density.
This is what learning looks like when curiosity leads, creativity is encouraged, and kids are engaged. When students can imagine it, build it, and touch it, the learning sticks!

Last week, we were pleased to announce the rollout of the Hunter Laureates, a new Lower School leadership opportunity. Six 6th grade students were selected to lead their peers by example in the Lower School. The Laureates set the tone for school decorum and the pursuit of goodness, beauty, and truth. They work to establish joy and order in all things.
Congratulations to the 6th graders who demonstrate kindness, service, and a commitment to championing the Hunter Way. The roles of the Laureates include:
🎓 Head Boy
🎓 Head Girl
🎓 Acolyte
🎓 Painter
🎓 Readers
Lead on, 6th grade!
