Congrats to our 6th graders on a wonderful performance of Hi Ho, Robin Hood this week!

Each year, every Grades class chooses a play that compliments their curriculum. Every student has a role, and the end result is always very impressive!

You never know what you’ll come across while peeking into classrooms on our campus. This week, our 8th grade teacher, Mr. Trostli, added this beautiful portrait to his classroom in honor of Presidents Day. 🇺🇸
The halls of our campus are always filled with such inspiring art from our students! Waldorf education weaves both visual and performing arts into every school day, and every academic subject, making learning fun while immersing students in their work. 🎨 🌈
Our 1st graders celebrated their 100th day of school today!
This week, in their biweekly music class, our 3rd graders worked on learning to read music through storytelling and drawing.

Here they are drawing the journey of Brown Bear to visually illustrate pitch variation.

A glimpse into a 1st grader’s main lesson Math work. The Waldorf curriculum introduces all mathematical operations at the same time, introducing the students to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through characters and storytelling. Bringing imagination and art into every subject allows our students to engage with their learning in a way that is unique to Waldorf education.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The gift of light we thankfully take,
But it shall not be only for our sake.
The more we give light from one to another,
The more light shines and grows ever further,
Until every spark by friends set aflame,
In every heart great joy now proclaims,
“Not long shall continue the darkness of the year –
the light draws near.”

Several weeks ago, our students had the absolute honor of working with renowned cellist, Christoph Wagner, during his week long residency at University of Richmond.

Christoph attended Waldorf schools throughout his entire education in his home country of Germany. It was there he was first introduced to the cello, and has since made a prestigious career for himself, performing all over the world.

Christoph was so excited to visit a Waldorf school in the states and performed both a concert for our student body as well as this Master Class for our strings students completely pro bono.

The magic and lifelong connection of Waldorf education in action! 🎶 ✨

Our 5th Graders hosted a special visit today from the Damodar family, who shared all about the upcoming Hindu festival, Diwali!

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Our students tasted traditional Diwali sweets, painted clay diyas, beautified the front sidewalk with rangoli decorations and even received celebratory mehndi tattoos.

Happy Diwali to all who celebrate! 🎉 🎆

Last month, our 5th and 6th graders rounded out their year long study of Botany with an incredible 3-day camping trip at the Spikenard Bee Sanctuary. Alex, head beekeper at the sanctuary, provided our students with an enormous amount of hands on learning and interaction with these important pollinators. Our students came home invigorated by all they learned, and full of ideas on how our community can better support and care for the bees! 🐝

New on the blog- we sat down with our music teacher, Catherine Flynn, as she wraps up her first year with us at RWS.

“I am a strong believer that everyone is a musician, and we are born with the ability to be musical. Music is a part of the world and it’s a part of life, and Waldorf has reiterated that for me.”

Over the past several weeks, the 3rd graders have been partnering with our woodworking teacher, Mr. Beverly, on a very special project.

Using what they’ve learned this year about measurement, they built an octogonal bench for the Early Childhood patio & play area.

Impressive work, 3rd grade!

Today, our Kindergartners participated in a very special rite of passage here at RWS. They spent the morning visiting our 1st graders in their classroom, seeing all of the main lesson book work that they’ll do next year when they enter the Grades.

It was so sweet to see both the nervous anticipation of the kinders, and proud show and tells from our 1st graders. 💕💕
