What started with noticing dandelions in the yard, turned into a nature walk collecting more, turned into reading books by the barn with a baby cow, turned into a discovery of life cycles! We found dandelions of each stage of its life cycle and watched a short video at lunch explaining the process. I then got out my life cycle manipulatives and we worked together to place them in order, like we did the dandelion! How wonderful it is to have the peace and time at school to learn in this way! 🐛🦋🐸🌱

Today we read a book called “Some Dinosaurs are Small”. The older students wrote the words, “big”, “medium” and “small” on paper and we sorted our toy dinos by size. We quickly realized we needed another label, “tiny”. We used vocabulary like “huge”, “gigantic”, and “enormous” when discussing dinosaurs. We then sorted popsicles sticks in the same way to prepare for our sculpture art. We sat the jars on the table and they began their work deciding what sizes they wanted and needed to keep their structure vertical. I heard things like, “Can you pass me the tiny sticks?”, and “I used the medium sticks to stabilize my big one!” Can you believe it? An engineering, vocabulary building, and mathematical activity all in one with some popsicle sticks and glue! These kids are amazing!

The students have shown interest in watering the flowers and I took it as a great opportunity to talk about how flowers soak up the water through their roots. I suspect more questions to arise as we continue care of our flowers and maybe a future project? 🤔🤗 We practiced cleaning up our classroom and talked about how to keep things tidy. We practiced using our ears to listen with a silly song and painting with the varying tempos of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”! What a wonderful first days of summer class! 🎨☀️

The first day of summer school was today! Today was full of connection and exploring with new friends! We practiced the flow of a school day and the children were so sweet and adapted well. My older more seasoned kiddos were wonderful examples for our new students. I was so proud of their patience and guidance to help them find a place in our classroom where they feel safe. Days like today prove to me time and time again that children are so sacred and are born with an overflow of compassion and kindness in their hearts. Happy summer! I’m excited to make some memories! ☀️❤️
