Women’s History Month originated as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub.L. 97-28, which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”
Throughout the next five years, Congress passed joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.”
Our Women’s Herstory Month programming celebrates all women, femmes, and gender-expansive people. We also celebrate women’s achievements around the world.
Join the Humanities Research Center, School of Education and Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) for a film screening and discussion of Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem, a documentary film by Brave New Films. The screening will be followed by an audience discussion facilitated by Dr. Shawn Utsey, Professor, Department of Psychology.
Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem exposes how our country’s history of racial injustice evolved into an enormous abuse of criminal justice power. 13 million people a year – most of them poor and people of color – are abused by this system.
Through first-person accounts of those charged under the Black Codes of the Reconstruction era paralleled with the outrageous stories of people trapped in the system today, the film brings to light the unfolding of a powerful engine of profits and racial inequality. With the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, this film provides historical context and examines America’s history of racist oppression.
Join us as we partner with VCU's College of Humanities and Science's Richard T. Robertson School of Media & Culture for a documentary film screening of The Arab Americans followed by a discussion and Q&A with filmmaker Abe Kasbo.
Filmed in eleven states and in production for over seven-years, The Arab Americans places the Arab American Immigrant experience within the context of American History and experience. The groundbreaking documentary is a uniquely American story that provides viewers with a first-ever glimpse of the Arab Americans' experience told through the eyes of famous and everyday people. Mapping the arc of American History, the film explores early and multiple waves of immigration along with the tremendous impact of 9/11 on the Arab American community and its challenges and dreams in light of the zeitgeist.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of "Negro History Week," the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries worldwide, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
