The Forensics Club visited VCU Forensic Science to conduct some activities and tour the labs. One of our students, Halle Vargas, had just learned the day before that she had been accepted to VCU and plans on majoring in Forensics, so the group was able to celebrate with her in a very special way. The students were able to evaluate a mock crime scene and be crime scene investigators. They toured the labs and learned about the use of evidence to determine innocence or guilt. Forensics is the application of science to criminal and civil law. Thank you VCU for having us!

Happy , Rams! Today we're shining another light on across by spotlighting Tal Simmons, Ph.D. and Catherine Connon, Ph.D. in VCU Forensic Science !

"When VCU made the decision to move students to online learning last March, Catherine Connon, Ph.D., and Tal Simmons, Ph.D., in the Department of Forensic Science didn’t know what they were going to do. For Simmons, there was just one assignment left in her undergraduate course, Scientific Crime Scene Investigation, and it was a big one. It was a major incident investigation, a day-long exercise in full personal protective gear, and made up half of their students’ grades for the semester. "

The fall session of kicks off today! We're excited to have the VCU Forensic Science Department within the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences provide their awesome forensic science class again. Richmond Public Schools students will study mock crimes, learn how to investigate crime scenes, study DNA, analyze fingerprints and examine evidence. Meet the instructors of "CSI: Richmond!" in this short video to learn more about this online class!

Families and Students: There's still time to register for the classes! Join us this week for "Family Time" from 4:30pm to 4:45pm (Monday - Thursday) to find out how to register for classes. The link to the NextUp Family Time zoom call is

We often get questions about the sexual assault reporting process. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, survivors can still report an assault. For information on reporting, visit: ❓ℹ️ Below are common questions and answers from our victim-witness specialists:

❓Q: If an assault occurred while I was at school, can I still report from home? ℹ️ A: Yes, you can call the VCU Police non-emergency line @ (804) 828-1196 to make an official report.

❓Q: What's next after I make a VCU police report?
ℹ️ A: The Victim Witness Coordinator, Ofc. Merricks, will contact you in 24 - 48 hours via phone and email to offer resources & services. If you request a criminal investigation, she will let you know which detective will investigate.

❓Q: What can I expect from VCU Police during a full investigation?
ℹ️ A: You will meet in-person, via Zoom or by phone for a formal interview with a detective. There may be several meetings with you, the detective & your assigned Commonwealth’s Attorney.

❓Q: How do I report an incident that occurred at home during the COVID-19 pandemic?
ℹ️ A: You can contact your local police department to make an official report. VCU Police can also take an administrative report (not mandatory) and connect you with counseling, advocacy services and assist you in making an official report with the agency that has jurisdiction over the incident. You can also work with our Victim-Witness Coordinator, who can let you know what to expect as the process continues.

❓Q: How long does a criminal investigation take?
ℹ️ A: There is no set time frame. The judicial process can be lengthy, but we ensure plenty of support during this time. Ofc. Merricks can accompany survivors to each court appearance and the Commonwealth’s Attorney will also have a victim advocate for you. VCU also offers on-campus counseling and advocacy services.

❓Q: What if I need accommodations for classes?
ℹ️ A: The court can provide written documentation for your class and work accommodations. VCU has several offices to assist with class accommodations, but these are only recommendations and requests; the professor makes the final decision.

❓Q. How does reporting an assault lead to a Title IX investigation?
ℹ️ A: Title IX investigations are administrative investigations by the university and are different from criminal investigations. If a survivor identifies a suspect to VCU Police, and that suspect is VCU-affiliated, the Title IX office is notified. For more information on Title IX, visit

❓Q: If I’m not ready to report to police, can I still have evidence collected?
ℹ️ A: Yes. You can call VCU Police or visit the VCUPD’s You Have Options web page for a list of hospitals offering forensic exams. Nurses can conduct exams even if you have not reported to police; evidence is preserved in case you choose to report later. VCU Police encourages survivors to prioritize medical needs following a sexual assault (and not just for evidence collection purposes).

❓Q: Can I talk with the police even if I'm not sure I want to make a report yet? ℹ️ A: Yes, VCU Police follows the You Have Options Program. Survivors, friends of survivors, colleagues and others can call in to obtain information about the reporting process without having to provide any details of the assault. We also take anonymous reports; any information about an assault has the potential to assist in other active sexual assault investigations.

Job Announcements to Post!

For those TL;DR, Instructions are below, but seriously, this is NOT TL.

Let us be your shingle!! (IKnowIKnow - that's an old term - but, all of us old people on FB use that phrase)

IN ORDER TO POST ON FB, here's all we need:
1. A working link to the job announcement.
2. We cannot post pdf's of a job posting. (FB won't let us) So, we need the link. Sometimes pdf's don't have the necessary information. So, make sure it does.
3. If someone needs to search for the job posting on an agency page, a job number or key words would be very helpful! Sometimes the link directly to the posting is really directly to the agency page. So, people need to do a search. They won't know how the job is posted. Sometimes the word "forensic" is not in the post. Sometimes the word "criminalist" is used, but never scientist. It can be complicated.
4. If you are open to questions, then a best contact is needed.

In order to post on Instagram, we also need a picture. We can make one, but having the details above would be great so that we can do that. If you have one, even better and please send it!

Send all this to us via Messenger, to the Department email at [email protected], or directly to Dr Peace at [email protected].

If you want to reach current students, we post to the IG. That's where the students are...well, they're really on TikTok, but we're not there. So, there's that. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for following directions!!! And, keep those posts coming!! We all know that searching for jobs can be complicated. 😵‍💫

One of the things we report to FEPAC and students say they want this: Posting Job Announcements. 🗣

ASCLD - Forensic Research Committee The ASCLD Forensic Research Committee seeks to advance the core science of forensics by closing technology gaps and enabling future forensic technologies.

The CSI Effect. We talk about it a lot.

Our own Dr. Sarah Williams joined up with Dr. Keith Morris from West Virginia University to talk about unique challenges for hands-on research with the COVID-19 pandemic and misconstrued expectations stemming from the CSI effect, forcing universities and their students to adapt. They discuss Ph.Ds. in forensic science and the role of NIJ and FEPAC in providing research and education opportunities for the next generation of forensic science professionals.
