Here are three great math professional learning opportunities from the Virginia Department of Education for teachers in grades 4-8:

VDOE is offering asynchronous mathematics microcredential courses for educators through Virtual Virginia. These courses are designed to strengthen mathematical understanding and enhance classroom instruction in grades 4-8. Here are the courses and their registration links:

This event helps administrators, coaches, and other leaders who are responsible for supporting and supervising special education develop instructional vision and coaching skills focused on executive function. We will address the High-Leverage Practices for Students with Disabilities (HLPs) and include evidence-based practices such as the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM). School leaders will walk away with actionable steps for increasing their teams’ ability to effectively instruct and support students with disabilities.

As the school year starts, have expectations been clearly established and communicated to students? We hope the answer is YES! But.....have expectations been clearly established and communicated to your math teachers? As a leader in your building, do you know what questions you should be asking?

Here are 5 questions to ask yourself and answer to establish expectations for your teachers. These same questions could be good conversation starters in your math department meetings or PLCs.

1. What should students be doing for most of the lesson?
2. What counts as evidence of mathematical understanding?
3. How should teachers respond when students struggle?
4. What practices are non-negotiable across math classrooms?
5. How will leaders monitor and support implementation?

This summer, CTI has been running The Journey Series, in which they have been talking with young adults with disabilities and their parents about their experiences with college, training, employment, and independent living. The series offers honest conversations with parents and students about what has been successful and the challenges with transition supports.

Looking for a couple of simple ways to build classroom community with high school students? Here are two I liked:

Say It in Six – Challenge students to tell a story about themselves using only six words. It could be funny, inspirational, meaningful, or simply describe how they’re feeling. Students can share their six words with the class or display them for others to read.

Common Ground – Put students in small groups and challenge them to find at least three things they have in common. They might compare favorite music, food, sports, hobbies, movies, or other interests. Groups can then share what they discovered.

Both are low-prep ways to get students talking, connecting, and learning about one another without putting them on the spot with a traditional introduction.

These first-day-of-school icebreakers for high school students will help your class get to know one another while having fun.
