THIS WEEK, OUR FOCUS IS ON THE EFFECT LITERACY HAS ON HEALTHCARE ACCESS AND OUTCOMES. Imagine having to navigate any of these touchpoints with low literacy skills: checking in at a kiosk or filling out paperwork at the hospital or doctor’s office; reading a prescription or medicine label; navigating medical directives for chronic conditions that require ongoing care. Not only can this affect individuals with low literacy levels, but it also affects their family members. Children who rely on them. Relatives who consistently need to help them with these common occurrences.

Last Wednesday, READ RVA had the opportunity to join Communities In Schools of Richmond for their Community Partner & Resource Fair! We were so honored to be in the room with so many organizations committed to supporting students and schools across Richmond.

With representatives from 42 schools in attendance, it was a great opportunity to connect, share resources, and strengthen the partnerships that help our community thrive. We’re grateful to be part of it!

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH, and we have a lot to celebrate!

Today, we start by introducing you to some of our amazing students, teachers, and tutors, as they share about the impact READ RVA is making on their lives.

📚For the final installment of our Summer Staff Reads series, Program Coordinator Shilpa Mondkar is sharing a book that really made her think.

Shilpa recommends Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, sharing that the book’s “voice in the head” concept, especially the subway train story, “completely opened my eyes to my own inner mental chatter.” She also found the book’s exploration of our identification with things to be “a huge reminder that you can’t find yourself through what you own.”

Her recommendation? Give it a read if you’re looking to quiet your mind!

☀️📚 READ RVA CEO Mary Graham’s favorite summer read was Kin, a thoughtful story about family, identity, and the complicated ties that connect us. She recommends it for the way the story invites readers to think about where we come from and who we become, and how the best books can make us see our own world a little differently.

And Mary isn’t the only one with reading recommendations! Her pup Winston gives The Art of Racing in the Rain five paws for its funny, heartfelt story of love, loyalty, and life through a dog’s eyes. He also recently finished A Gentleman in Moscow, which earned another five-paw rating for being “charming, cozy, and just the right amount of mischief.” 🐾
