Always look for new ways! I’ve been doing this “batik” assignment with my 2nd graders for years. I’ve used crayons, oil pastels…and suddenly… why not a grease pencil!!! They stay sharp, are harder, and they are more capable to do details.

It has been an intresting time teaching art during covid. The whole hands on/hands off, mask on interaction can be somewhat lacking. But I have taken on a new assignment for myself this year. A sign if you will…for the classroom. This painting represents art covered from the walls of Lascaux cave to the art of the 20th century. It’s been fun to hear the student reaction to seeing things they are familiar with and watching their anticipation for the finished painting. I hope to finish before Christmas break.

I am just starting this assignment on 1 point perspective with my 6th grade for the second year in a row. It went so well last year. They have to draw a room in 1 point perspective and it has to portray parts of at least 3 great works of art from the late 19th to 20th century, which is what they study in history. The challenges from the "rules" and pouring over great works of art have made it a highlight. (these are from Spring 2018)

These collage pictures were done in an after school class. All of these are done by 2nd or 3rd graders. We looked at birds and painted papers with the colors we saw and used them to collage feathers on our bird drawings.

Please feel free to use this:
A lovely woman, preceding me, wrote this poem for our little ones to learn the elements of design. We had her for only a couple of years before cancer took her. She would love to know it is well used.
The Elements of Design
God the Master Artist, knew
We needed His designs to use.
When you look real carefully
There are 8 elements you will see.
Line, Shape,
Form, Space,
Pattern, Texture,
And Value too.
And without Color,
What would we do?
So, use the elements of Design
To make your artwork really shine!
