Board Policy 2402- Acceptance of office and oath of office. (Copied from our Richmond Board page bylaws).

Elected Board Members

Before entering the office of Board member, a Board member-elect must:
a. take the oath of office as provided by the Michigan Constitution; and

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this State, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Member of the Board of Education of Richmond Community Schools according to the best of my ability.

b. File an acceptance of office with the Secretary within 10 business days after receiving the Certificate of Election from the District’s election coordinator.

If a Board member-elect neglects or fails to file an acceptance of office with the Secretary within 10 business days after receiving the Certificate of Election from the District’s election coordinator, then the Board office will immediately become vacant.

🎯 Myth vs. Fact: Unmasking the Richmond School Board🎯

MYTH: The school board has to vote "yes" on the massive bundle of policies on the agenda every month.
FACT: They don't. The current board chooses to use "Consent Agendas" to pass massive changes to student handbooks and spending protocols in a single, unanimous block vote. Under Robert’s Rules of Order, any single trustee can pull an item out for an individual, public debate.

MYTH: Richmond can just "opt out" of mandatory state standardized testing if we want to.
FACT: Legally, the district cannot opt out. Dropping below a 95% participation rate on state assessments forces the Michigan Department of Education to slash our funding and threaten district accreditation. However, we can eliminate excessive local diagnostic testing to give classroom hours back to teachers.

MYTH: School board members hold individual authority to make changes in the district.
FACT: Under Policy 2302 (Code of Ethics), an individual trustee has zero legal power. Power belongs entirely to the community (stand up for it), exercised collectively by the board out in the open. A board seat isn't a crown; it’s a public trust.

MYTH: Annual M-STEP and SAT data is the best way for the board to check if our kids are learning.
FACT: State test data is a lagging post-mortem. By the time the board reviews state scores in July, the school year is completely over and the student has already moved on. My platform stance would be quarterly local benchmarks so we catch learning gaps in the fall, not when it’s too late.

A curriculum on paper doesn't teach a child. A teacher does!

When teachers burn out and leave for neighboring Macomb or St. Clair County schools, our kids lose stability.

📈 The "Leading vs. Lagging" Data Challenge

Waiting for state test scores in July (Too late). Quarterly classroom benchmarks (Proactive).

Right now, we rely on state M-STEP and SAT scores to see if our math and reading programs are working. That data is an autopsy. By the time we get the scores in July, the school year is over, and the student has already moved on.

A policy shift requiring building principals to present quarterly, local benchmark data directly to the board would help the lagging post-mortems. Catching learning gaps in November and fixing them in December, rather than finding out our kids fell behind a year too late.

Over-testing leads to burnout for both the students and the teachers.
