Improv for Starting a Conversation:
For some of us, it’s a nightmare situation. Going up to that person we admire and trying to connect? Starting a conversation out of nothing? It’s terrifying for tons of people. Learning improv can make this far less frightening - or at least give you tools to make the issue less daunting.
One of the factors at play here is the constant decision making that occurs at the top of a talk. What’s the point of this conversation, what do they want from me (or what do I want from them), is this going well? All of these questions are flying back and forth. LOTS of opportunities to screw this up.
This is when figuring out what the conversation is really about can be beneficial. And that’s what improv training is all about.
From the moment two people step on stage the goal is to connect. Nobody is solely concerned about their contributions to the scene because all we’re doing in the beginning is laying the foundation. This is why if someone says something INSANE early in the scene and expects a huge laugh, it’s often awkward. Sound familiar? This happens in real life conversations all the time.
Improvisers know that a successful scene starts off with half of an idea from one person. Then their partner contributes the other half. It’s this basic, patient give-and-take that provides context as the scene gathers momentum. This should also sound familiar, because it’s how most successful conversations go. If it doesn’t, get into an improv class.
