When it comes to implementing proactive techniques, providing checklists to an has a great deal of benefits.

They can help ensure that important steps are being taken, and they also help identify redundant but necessary steps that more seasoned, veteran teachers do instinctively.

Classroom management is the MOST important aspect of a teacher’s classroom.

I believe this is true. Without strong management skills, it is extremely difficult for students to learn.

An aspect that I model and coach the teachers I work with is to display a Welcome Screen like the one below (this is what my student teacher used at the start of this week).

This Welcome Screen is projected at the beginning of each class period as students enter the class.

Benefits:

1) The students have the class agenda along with any upcoming assessment and homework reminders, limiting students being surprised on quiz day (you’ll still have that one who’ll say, “We have a quiz?!”). I just look at them...

2) As students enter, the directions inform them of the expectations for the start of class. This allows the class time to be used in the most efficient manner. This also gives me the opportunity to reward students who are following directions.

3) As students are working on the assignment that is listed for #3, this time is used to take attendance and to read an email or two. The timer is there for both the teacher and students.

This simple but effective, proactive strategy takes less than 5 minutes to update each day!
