Step In or Step Back? Having engaged, present grown ups in their life is vital for a child's development. Guidance is important, but it is also possible to over-engage and actually hinder our child's skill development. After all, learning occurs right at the edge of a person's comfort zone. A Stanford study found that children with parents who over-engaged (defined as stepping in to instruct or correct while their child was already appropriately engaged in a task) struggled more with emotional regulation and impulse control. This can especially be a problem as children are preparing to make big transitions into Kindgergarten and Elementary school, where they will likely receive less individualized attention. To help children exercise the skills they will need to self-regulate, researchers suggest the following:
Give yourself permission to take a break- if your child is actively engaged in a task, don't interfere. Intervene instead only if children are breaking rules or are not very focused
Allow your child plenty of time where they are "in charge" of their play. This will help them gain confidence and independence. They will also likely be more interested, and therefore learning more.
Don't be hard on yourself if you have trouble stepping back! It's okay to be involved in kid's play and help them or give suggestions. Just try to also create opportunities where your little one can take the lead.

Parents and teachers often ask kids to behave in certain ways: to be focused, patient, generous, quiet, calm, etc. etc. etc. Just verbally requesting these things often ends up being extremely frustrating. and ineffective. Sometimes, we feel small children are just being disobedient when really they lack the ability in that moment to regulate their bodies enough to comply with your request. Mindfulness practices help to create new pathways in the brain and give your child tools to add to their social/emotional toolbox. The past few weeks we have been learning to breathe like bears, buzz like bumblebees, focus on specific sounds, make rainstorms, dance for the sun and much more.
These lessons have been courtesy of Willey, a kids mindfulness and yoga instructor who has released 6 albums of mindful kids songs as well as published 6 books. It has been wonderful to see our little ones gain new mental skills using the concepts taught in Kira's songs.
