Pointer #1:
Thank the people who help you succeed.

Students: Your prof's love when you share good news with them, including after they've written you a letter of recommendation! These kinds of messages always make my day. Another tip: don't forget to thank your high school teachers for their letters of recommendation, too!

Congrats to my colleagues at St. Lawrence University, where I taught for 11 years before moving to VA. I've always felt that the students at SLU are special and that the faculty are incredibly dedicated to them. I'm still in close touch with many of my St. Lawrence students today!

Parents: check this out! A mom of a college student sent this to her daughter and her daughter's best friends. So creative! I love it!

Students: if your parents send this to you, be sure to do it! You'll make them happy and you'll earn some cash along the way (and I bet you'll also have some fun and even meet a couple of new people)!

A Professor's Pointers for Success in College: 21 Easy-to-Follow Tips 08/07/2023

"It's about that time again. Sleepy college towns will begin to awaken, abuzz with an excitement that only college students can inspire. Young scholars will soon arrive on college and university campuses, ready, or not so ready, to take on the world of higher education."

I wrote this several years ago, as the introduction to a piece on advice for college students, which was published by HuffPost College. Over the years I've shared my pointers with my own students and others. Teaching students how to prepare for college and how to be successful, both academically and personally, has become a passion of mine.

I love this time of year (though I prefer the fall weather!), especially the first day of school. I've been teaching for 25 years (!), 3 years at the high school level and 22 at the university level, and I still love the first day of school, with the nervous excitement, the newly sharpened pencils, and the clean slate and new beginnings that a another school year offers.

I'm wishing all the students a smooth start to the fall semester and a great "first day of school." Parents: I'll be thinking about you, too.

A Professor's Pointers for Success in College: 21 Easy-to-Follow Tips Here's to ivy-covered buildings, critical thinking, independence, making friends for life, asking hard questions, becoming global citizens, and discovering who you really are.
