This timely session will examine maternal and infant mortality trends, disparities in maternity care access, and the role midwifery care can play in improving outcomes, particularly in rural communities.

Midwife of the Week: Amelia Henning, MSN, CNM, FACNM, IBCLC

This week, we are proud to recognize Amelia Henning, a staff midwife and Director of Breastfeeding & Lactation at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she has served families for more than 20 years. She is fellowship-trained in breastfeeding and lactation medicine, co-founder of the Midwives in Lactation Collective (now the ACNM Subcommittee on Breastfeeding and Lactation), and an advocate for improving maternal health outcomes through innovative postpartum care.

In addition to caring for patients, Amelia educates future health care providers, serves on national breastfeeding and lactation initiatives, and works to advance equitable, evidence-based care for mothers and babies.

Thank you, Amelia, for your dedication to midwifery, lactation education, and the families you serve every day.

More than 60 midwives, birth workers, healthcare professionals, and community partners gathered in Hilo for three days of education, connection, and collaboration. Even amid Hurricane Lala, attendees came together to explore clinical education, midwifery policy and licensure, culturally grounded care, and the future of midwifery in Hawaiʻi.

The gathering honored Native Hawaiian knowledge and traditional approaches to care while strengthening relationships across midwifery communities and birth settings.
