With great sadness, we lost another very loved teacher. Ellie Machoukas passed away yesterday after a 4 year battle with stomach cancer. I will post funeral information as it becomes available.

In Loving Memory of Detective James M. Skernivitz
End of Watch: September 3, 2020

Today, we pause to remember and honor Detective Skernivitz — a beloved officer, a devoted public servant, and a true son of Cleveland.

Born and raised in the Slavic Village neighborhood, Det. Skernivitz lived a life rooted in purpose and pride for his city. From the moment he was appointed a Cleveland Police Officer on February 17, 1998, he dedicated himself to protecting and uplifting the community he called home.

Just one day before his tragic passing, he was sworn in as a member of the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force as part of Operation Legend. He was ready to take on this new mission with the same passion he brought to every assignment.

Today and every day, we remember his strength, his sacrifice, and his unwavering dedication to making Cleveland a better place. He was more than an officer — he was a friend, a mentor, a hero.

His legacy continues to live on in the hearts of his family, his brothers and sisters in blue, and the community he served with love.
