I get scared, a lot. The worst is when those fears get in the way of things I deeply want to do. But that doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to.

Erin and I wanted to offer a workshop on this topic because of personal experience as well as what we hear from clients. Fear can be SO powerful. If you're interested in learning about ways to meet your fears so they don't hold you back, please join us.

Courageously Taking Action
Saturday October 1, 10:00 a.m. ET
via Zoom

According to Brené Brown, “If you show up and are seen, if you go into the arena, if you create, if you want to be courageous, you will get your ass kicked—that is the one guarantee.” So, how do you do the difficult thing you most need to do? How do you move forward given the possibility that you will face at least some unwanted consequences? In this workshop, we will offer and practice tools for right-sizing your fears, managing circumstances you can, letting go of the ones you can’t, and moving forward in spite of your remaining fears. We will explore concrete strategies to face your day, your choices, and your life with courage and confidence.

Messages we get about ourselves are SO powerful. My own experience being bullied as a kid was formative, and occasionally those voices still rattle around at the edge of my consciousness, when circumstances aren't going my way. I have a strong memory of this girl, Jill, who would put spitballs in my hair in science class, knock my books out of my arms in the hallway, and prank call me at home and hiss, "Loser!" She wasn't the only one, and even today in certain vulnerable moments, I will doubt myself, wondering if perhaps the bullies were right.

But contemporary neuroscience shows us that we can create new neuropathways that, when strengthened, can become dominant. The part of us from the past shrinks as the present voice grows. We learn to talk to ourselves differently, which deeply impacts how we can show up in the world. More and more, I understand who I really am, and those voices from the past are softer and show up less often. This has everything to do with personal growth work I've done.

If this is something you struggle with, coaching can help. We invite you to sign up for a free 15-minute session to see if Erin or I might be a good fit and to talk more about how coaching works.

Make the Unexpected Your Collaborator
Thursday September 15 7:00 p.m. ET
via Zoom

When the unexpected happens, the result is sometimes surprisingly better than what we had planned. Of course, it doesn’t always turn out this way, but disruptions always come with opportunities. In this workshop, we will explore and practice ways to maintain equilibrium, spot the opportunities, and nurture our collaborative role in the face of the unexpected. Sometimes these practices will make the unexpected more tolerable, and sometimes these practices make the unexpected a doorway to the unexpectedly amazing. When we’re prepared, we see this magic happen more and more often in our lives.

I recently had the immense privilege of serving the cutting-edge Synergy Consulting Company. Dr. Pascal and Crystal Losambe provide DEI consultant services to businesses, educational institutions, and nonprofits. There’s so much to these two incredible people about connection…one, their work is entirely based on research on the brain and the biological underpinnings of our need to belong. Two, they embody compassion, strength, intelligence, and warmth, so they really are the perfect people to do this very important and challenging work. I was honored and humbled to serve as editor for their new book which I hope to be promoting this coming fall.

In the meantime, if you or anyone you know is looking for a company to do DEI work, I can’t recommend these folks strongly enough.

Here's how they describe the core of their work:
“Our vision is to foster a sense of empowerment and belonging in individuals and equip organizations with structures and tools to create cultures of inclusion and effective business practices. At Synergy Consulting Company, we strongly believe that organizations and educational institutions are greatly enhanced when their employees/members feel safe and enabled to contribute to their social, occupational, and educational environments. Students, members, and employees thrive when they feel they belong, and we become a more effective, empathetic, and empowered society as a whole. We educate from an understanding of our biology and upon the basis of our shared humanity, which strongly influences our need to belong.”

I love playing and learning with others; some of my deepest growth and most wonderful moments have happened in groups. Erin and I want to cultivate connection through our service offerings, so we are proud to announce our very first online workshop series! There are three one-time sessions on developing meaningful relationships, collaborating with the unexpected, and living courageously. Check out the descriptions and info below! And, best part? If you sign up for our mailing list, you can attend one session free of charge!

1) Creating Fulfilling Close Relationships: Wednesday August 17, 7:00 p.m ET

Whether in love, work, or friendship, fulfilling relationships don’t happen by accident. They need to be nurtured and tended to. They need to be approached with vulnerability and generosity. In this workshop, we will explore and practice approaches and shifts in perspective that can bring immediate improvements in your close relationships. Turning the focus on ourselves and bringing more flexibility, creativity, compassion, and clarity creates a healthier dynamic that yields positivity and opportunity in new and hugely enriching ways.

Flipping the bird. Rolling my eyes. Yelling at my kid. We react all the time. And reactions can feel so inevitable, so unstoppable. Yet there are practices to help loosen reaction's grip on us, helping make room for responding instead. Here's one of my spiritual teachers, Richard Rohr, on identifying with our pain and how we can make shifts:

“(Eckhart)Tolle defines this ‘accumulated pain’ as ‘a negative energy field that occupies your body and mind.’ In this space, we seem to have a kneejerk, self-protective reaction to everything—and everyone—around us. I emphasize the word reaction here because there’s no clear, conscious decision to think or act in this way. It just happens and we are seemingly powerless to stop it. By doing healing work and by practicing meditation, we learn to stop identifying with the pain and instead calmly relate to it in a compassionate way.”

My mom stopped talking to her parents when I was a teenager, and it was heartbreaking. Now they have passed and I still have moments of sadness for what could have been. So I was really excited to learn that my colleague, family therapist Glo Harris, has a fascinating new project: Intergenerational Healing. I interviewed Glo about this incredible transformational work that will hopefully help lots of families do better than mine. You can reach her at GloHarris.com if you're interested in finding out more.
