It's Hispanic Heritage Month!

Students are learning about the fun rhythms of Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. Instead of just listening, students are jumping right into the music by using body percussion—clapping, stomping, patting, and dancing to the beat!

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Mr. DeVita

Meet Mr. DeVita! He loves teaching English to his students, but he also enjoys learning Spanish in his free time. If he could pick any classroom pet, he would choose a lizard (he has wanted one since he was a kid). Big news for his family: his sister is having a baby soon, so he is going to be an uncle for the first time!

In his free time, Mr. DeVita stays happy by spending time with his wife, going to the movies, eating delicious Ecuadorian locro soup, cheering for the Timberwolves and Lynx, and exploring the Boundary Waters.

Today in Mystery Science, we explored why different kinds of dogs and pigeons look so unique!

Students played "Pigeon Pairings" to compare traits between parents, babies, and siblings. They found out how traits are passed down—and how selecting special traits leads to awesome, extreme animal breeds!

STEM Staff Spotlight!

Meet Ms. Forster, one of the new faces at STEM! With 14 years of experience in education, ranging from teaching 1st and 2nd grade to serving as a school administrator, she brings so much passion and heart to our school community.

Get to know her a little better:

Favorite Subject to Teach: Reading and phonics! I LOVE talking about books. I also love watching students hit their stride with reading fluency.

Favorite Subject to Learn About: History! While she thought it was boring back in her school days, she now loves reading about history and wishes she could go back and retake every class.

Dream Classroom Pet: I would love to have a guinea pig. They are cute and cuddly, but not too small! I love all things soft and snuggly.

Outside the Classroom: You can find her out in nature! This past summer, she set a personal goal to walk around a different lake every day for 30 days, with sunset walks over the water as her absolute favorite. She’s also an avid traveler who loves hiking in National Parks and is gearing up for her very first trip to Yellowstone this October!

Mrs. Allen’s 4th-grade class tackled a tough STEM challenge! Fred the gummy worm’s boat flipped over, trapping his life preserver underneath.

Students couldn't touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver. Using only paper clips (and zero stabbing), they worked together to flip the boat, put on Fred's life preserver, and set him safely back inside. Each team saved Fred by the end of the lesson!
