Our Dragon Bread served as the centerpiece to last Friday’s Fall Harvest Festival. It was wonderful to have all our families there along with grandparents, siblings, extended family members, and alumni families. Along with making the Dragon Bread, the children helped prepare a big pot of Stone Soup, with vegetables grown in our garden along with contributions from each family to make a true community pot. The meal was topped off with delicious Apple crisp made from apples we picked on our orchard trip last week. Children’s crafts and a shared Michaelmas Circle made the festivities complete. Thanks to all who attended!

Today is the last day for children moving on to kindergarten. We made pocket dolls so that we could take a reminder of old friends with us wherever we go.

When a child pretends to be a cat, they are stepping into a role that allows both closeness and gives them lots of control. They can do things as a cat they would never get away with as a child. Like climb onto a table, completely ignore you or just ‘meow’ loudly in your face!

A large underwing moth (Catocala) wanted to play in the treehouse today. We examined its triangular shape and the intricate tree bark pattern of its wings. Then when it took flight we saw bright flashes of orange from its underwings before it landed on Grandfather Oak, blending in perfectly. We were so fascinated by the moth we almost didn’t notice the katydid hanging out right next to it.

Adding options to the play yard. I was thinking of a younger cohort when I purchased this play set and that this crew might be too old for it, but they all loved it. Car, fort, hideout, jumping platform, penguin slide were just the beginning. Something for everyone. Sometimes we give up on toys and types of play too quickly. It’s important to let our children’s play evolve by providing open ended play experiences and the time and space to make them their own.

They could not agree on whether they were playing Duck-Duck-Gray Duck or Duck-Duck-Goose, so they decided to play Chicken-Chicken-Egg. (Though really it was more like Egg-Egg-Chicken.)
