A safety plan isn’t useful if a student can’t reach it in a crisis.

It’s a written, personalized list of coping strategies a student builds with a trusted adult. Here are Dr. Scott Poland’s 4 best practices for effective student safety planning:

1. Write it down, never verbal only. A student in crisis can’t recall a conversation, but they can look at the page.
2. Build it with the student. Strategies they help build are one they’ll use.
3. Give copies to the student, parent, and staff. Shared visibility means no one person is left holding the plan alone.
4. Revisit every time you meet. Learn if there’s anything new that could be added.

Every adult in a school has a role in prevention—it starts with recognizing the signs.
