Last week, Carole Leung, a student in our Cognition and Neuroscience Ph.D. program, presented "Developmental Differences in How Parental Sentiment and Pronoun Use Relate to Adolescent Psychological Well-being" as part of the Psychology Lecture Series.

🧠 💬 Examining 71 parent-adolescent dyads, Carole walked us through her study on how parental communication patterns impact youth mental health. Her findings highlighted crucial developmental differences: while younger adolescents showed higher self-esteem with highly positive parental responses, older adolescents responded quite differently.

Last Thursday, Dr. Kirupa Suthakar presented "Fine Tuning Auditory Processing: What Do We Gain From Feedback Circuitry?" as part of the Neuroscience Seminar Series.

🧠 🎧 Dr. Suthakar serves as assistant professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences’ Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing.​ As principal investigator of the UT Dallas Descending Auditory Circuits Laboratory, she walked us through how the brain filters meaningful sound from noise to focus on what really matters.

More than 80 PhD students, faculty, and alumni gathered last Thursday at the Center for Brain Health for the 2026 School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences PhD Retreat — a full day of professional development, networking, and research engagement! ✨

Highlights included a virtual alumni panel connecting current students with BBS graduates across disciplines, and a Student Data Blitz 📊 where presenters from multiple programs shared snapshots of their research and scholarly work.

Attendees also took part in mentoring table discussions covering topics like building strong mentor-mentee relationships, navigating confidence and self-doubt, preparing for academic and industry careers, developing effective writing habits, and balancing work and life. The day wrapped up with a poster session 📌, giving students the chance to showcase their research and connect with fellow attendees.

Thank you to everyone who made this retreat such a meaningful and inspiring experience for our BBS community! 🎉

Welcome to Fall 2026. As we start a new academic year, I feel grateful to work alongside all of you. The dedication you show in our classrooms, labs, clinics, and across our school truly shows the strength of our community.
