Did you know Labor Day is celebrated on different dates around the world? 🌎

In the United States and Canada, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September. In China, Vietnam, Mexico, and many other countries, International Workers’ Day is observed on May 1.

Different dates, same purpose: celebrating workers' contributions and achievements!

American High School Academics 101 | How Does GPA Work in the U.S.?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It summarizes a student’s overall academic performance—not just the result of one exam.

On a common 4.0 scale:

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0

Some schools like ILTexas PHS also calculate a weighted GPA, which recognizes the added difficulty of courses such as AP and Dual Credit. Exact calculation methods may vary by school.

Why does GPA matter? Colleges consider both your grades and the level of courses you take when reviewing your application. A strong GPA can open the door to more university and scholarship opportunities.

Students don’t simply show up and volunteer. They take the lead.

A pep rally is a school-wide celebration held before a big game or special event. Students come together to support their teams, enjoy performances, participate in games, and celebrate their school community.

The ILTexas Mentor Program pairs local students with international students, giving them a friend to study with, learn American culture from, and share new experiences with.

Through monthly connections and activities—from sports and bowling to outdoor adventures—mentors help international students feel welcomed, supported, and at home in their new school community.

🏅 What does AP Gold mean for ILTexas PHS students?

AP, or Advanced Placement, allows high school students to take college-level courses while still in high school. Strong AP exam scores may also qualify students for college credit or advanced placement, depending on the university.

ILTexas Garland High School earned Gold recognition on the College Board’s 2024–25 AP School Honor Roll—a distinction earned by only 7% of eligible high schools.

At our Garland campus, ILTexas PHS international students learn alongside local students and benefit from the same teachers, curriculum, and AP opportunities. This means access to a challenging, college-preparatory academic environment while experiencing American high school life.
