We all appreciate the certificate you prepared for each of us, it’d be the best proof of our staying at UWECBC-ICC!

Two students from UW-Eau Claire–Barron County, Kaihua Li and Miao Shi, recently earned third place in the nation for their exceptional work in the Student Research League (SRL) competition. The recognition was announced during the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) annual conference held in Georgia in November 2024. As part of their recognition, the team was honored with a plaque and $500 monetary awards from AMATYC.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Wufeng Tian, associate professor of mathematics at UW-Eau Claire–Barron County, the team presented their research paper titled “Mathematical Analysis of 100% Renewable Energy Transitioning in Milwaukee.” Their project proposed a comprehensive mathematical framework for transitioning Milwaukee to 100% renewable energy, with a particular focus on utilizing wind energy from Lake Michigan. The research also outlined practical strategies, including phased implementation plans, financing models, and fostering collaborations between government and businesses.

Both students are now preparing for the next chapter of their academic journeys. Kaihua Li will transfer to UW-Madison in Spring 2025 to major in Computer Science, while Miao Shi is planning to transfer to UW-Madison in Fall 2025 to major in Finance.
