Behold, the final harvest of potatoes planted from the Trader Joe's potato growing experiment. Not much of a harvest. In fact I believe we harvested fewer pounds of potatoes than we originally planted.

Since we only planted one type of potato in one area it is hard to say exactly why these failed to thrive. Well, better luck next year I guess. Looks like winter squash is going to be our main storable caloric staple for the cold months.

Harvested nearly all of our Lakota squash and the few pumpkins that are ready. Tomorrow we are expected to have a temperature drop from 95 down to 32 degrees and so are working hard to harvest as much as we can incase our meager frost protection fails and the weather turns out to be colder than expected.

The majority of the pumpkins and all of the butternut squash are still under-ripe. I have trimmed back their vines to hopefully help them ripen sooner.

The very first seed heads of our sorghum are starting to spring forth! After being munched to within an inch of it's life multiple times by a roving cow, I didn't know what the rest of the season would look like for it.

It seems to work well as a boundary/shade plant for our mixed squash patch.

I am considering other ways of using this plant for next season... Has anyone tried planting this (or anything similar) over a septic system?

A couple of these Lakota squash are about ready to harvest! These were planted from seeds we saved ourselves.

These are a little bigger than a large cantaloupe. This is the maxima squash we are growing this year in our mixed squash patch.

We have had a couple weeks with very little rain and temps in the 90s. It is easy to find the motivation to water everyday when you are growing stuff this cool!

So many pumpkins! We are growing several varieties of winter squash this year including "Sugar Pie Pumpkin". The seeds were over 10 years old and were very slow to germinate.

We have a couple of mixed squash patches and so it is interesting to see how each variety responds.

This corn is impressive stuff! The stalks are nearly 3ft tall and some small ears are starting to appear.

That may not sound impressive considering how late in the season it is. But once you realize it has been eaten to the ground three times by a roving cow it is pretty amazing. I am still hopeful we will get a small harvest. Next year we will definitely fence our corn.

Lakota squash coming along nicely. The seeds for these came from squash that we had grown ourselves on this same property a few years back. Always important to save seeds from plants that do well.

These are currently about the size of a baseball and flourishing with the monsoon rains. They were planted in shallow basins. We have barely had to water since the monsoons started. Looking forward to lots of squash this winter.

We are experimenting with planting our squash, cucumbers, and melons in raised beds, rows, and basins.

We had a really solid rain/thunderstorm yesterday, so as soon as it was over we rushed out to plant the rest of our summer crops (corn, amaranth, quinoa and additional squash) before dark. Seems like we always start our planting sessions about 1 hr before dark!

We found the culprit that has been chewing down our most succulent plants. Very cool looking ground squirrel, but not so cool when in the garden eating the best lettuces! I believe this to be a rock squirrel.

We are experimenting with growing runner beans in pots. Last year we tried to grow them right next to the house.

Upon further consideration, we decided it was probably better not to water within inches of the foundation.

So, this year we will still grow them close to the house (so they can climb up the side).

Finally made a tamping box for our used espresso grounds. Nothing like a goat milk latte to start your day off right.

It's kind of a chicken or the egg situation. If I didn't have goats, I wouldn't have to wake up as early and perhaps I wouldn't need goat milk lattes.
