What can parents do at home over the summer to help the struggling reader?

Read to them, perform plays where the characters read their parts, talk about the 'parts' of a story or movie (problem, rising action, climax, falling action, theme). If the family is going on an outing, go to the library to research the event first (camping, a new city, national parks, etc.), cook together using a recipe.... that will also build memories.

Reading is EVERYWHERE!!!!! menus, billboards, cereal boxes, video games, board game directions, etc. Focus on acknowledging reading and support the child's strengths while you do it.

Summer is here..... avoid the summer slide by reading to and with your child. The modeling of smooth but not necessarily FAST reading is important for them to hear. Parents who use questioning techniques concerning why things happen, what might you do in the same situation, and askng for predictions makes reading more enjoyable...... and aids in comprehension.
