After a decade of teaching, Ms. Hornstein stepped away from the classroom to focus on raising her children. When she was ready to return to teaching, she found a way to reconnect with the work she loved while maintaining the work-life balance she needed as a parent. Today, she teaches seventh-grade life science with K12 at Virginia Virtual Academy.

“I was ready to get back into teaching. I wanted that identity again, but I also needed a work-life balance. I didn’t want a job that kept me in a school building all day. Being with VAVA has allowed me the balance I was looking for. I get to feel fulfilled professionally, connect with students, and still be present for my family. It really is the best of both worlds.”

For Ms. Hornstein, coming back to the classroom also meant getting back to what she loves most about teaching science and working with middle school students.

“[Students are] still excited to learn. They want relationships with their teachers. They act like they’re too cool for school, but they’re not, and I love reminding them of that. I love helping them see how science connects to their everyday lives. Even at 13 or 14, what they’re learning matters, and I want them to understand why.

I would venture to guess that I have more girls speaking up, more girls participating, and more girls leading discussions, because I think being online removes some of the intimidation they might feel in a physical classroom. They’re more willing to answer questions and share ideas. It changes the dynamic in a really positive way.

Teaching is something I truly love. Being able to do it with balance, supportive colleagues, and students I genuinely connect with is everything I hoped for.”

In 2022, Ms. Moseley joined Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) as a science teacher. Since then, she has taught a variety of courses, from earth science and chemistry to environmental science and biology.

“Mainly, my passion is biology. It’s difficult content to teach, but I love it. Everyone has to take biology, so, I get to see almost every student that comes through the school.

A part of my job is figuring out how to take this content that is so difficult and make it applicable to their lives. We use a platform called Gizmos, and it’s really cool because it’s an interactive lab. Since joining the world of online education, I feel like my knowledge of technology has increased so much. I’ve also learned to analyze data much better than I did in the past.

Helping students succeed in something they once thought was too difficult – that’s the best part of the job.”

The learning doesn’t stop just because it’s summer! ☀️🌎

Today we’re looking back at some of this year’s virtual field trips that sparked curiosity, inspired discovery, and brought learning to life beyond the traditional classroom.

🚀 May: Students traveled from Earth to outer space with NASA astronaut Terry Virts, exploring what it takes to live and work aboard a spacecraft. They also journeyed back in time with paleontologist Dr. Emily Bamforth at the Dinosaur Museum to uncover the mysteries of prehistoric life.

🤿🐍June: Students explored the wonders of our planet with Joe Grabowski, diving into ocean exploration and discovering marine life from around the globe. They also learned all about spectacular snakes with Sam Wynns, getting an up-close look at these fascinating creatures and what makes them so unique.

At our organization, the learning isn’t just for students—our teams get to be part of these incredible experiences too. From joining virtual field trips to witnessing moments of curiosity and discovery firsthand, our employees get a front-row seat to the impact they help create every day.

These experiences are just one example of the creativity, innovation, and collaboration that make our learning community so special. We’re proud of the teams who create meaningful opportunities for students to explore, discover, and connect—no matter where they are.
