FEES Families,
By now, I hope that you’ve read through Superintendent Brabrand’s message explaining what schools will look like in the fall. It is also outlined on the FCPS website’s Return to School page.
FCPS is asking that parents make a choice regarding their children’s instructional program very soon. Your 2 choices are:
1. Your child(ren) will have online instruction full-time. They won’t come to the school. Live lessons will occur 4 days per week, Tues.- Fri. Independent assignments will be provided on Mondays. The schedule for lessons will be more ambitious than this past spring’s distance learning program. More info here.
2. Your child(ren) will come on-site and attend school at last 2 full days per week. During the other days, your child will have assignments to complete. Bus services, food services and other normal school-day services will be provided. More info, including sample schedules and social distancing in classrooms & buses here.
In both scenarios, attendance or participation is mandatory and grading practices will be in effect. We will be back to school!
FCPS is requiring parents to make a choice by July 10. Watch for a message next week with a link for submitting your choice. I know that this date is coming up very quickly and that this is a difficult decision to make. We want to add some information to the superintendent’s message so that you better understand the situation and can make a more informed decision about your children’s schooling.
All of us wishes we had the conditions to go back to normal with everyone in class. We miss your kids, and I’ll bet they (and you) miss school! That being said, the teachers and we respect every parent decision about next year. If you opt for online instruction only, we’ll provide a great program. If you choose to have your child come to school, we’ll teach them on-site within our parameters for social distancing and thorough sanitization practices. We’ll have FEES teachers leading instruction in both scenarios.
While this is a difficult choice for parents, I’m glad that FCPS leadership is building a return to school model that is based on parent choice. The reason that the choice must be made soon is because I will need to create two simultaneous school programs with one staff. Once we parents’ choices, we can work with our awesome staff to determine who will be teaching in our online program and who will be teaching in-person. Some teachers have circumstances that may drive them to request an assignment in one setting over the other; hence, the need for a deadline and time to plan this summer.
We are happy to talk to any parent about this in more detail. We will not attempt to sway anyone’s decision, but we can hopefully answer questions and reassure you during these uncertain times.
We hope you and your children are doing great.
