Los Angeles Unified recognizes Indigenous Peoplesโ Day and Native American Awareness Week, honoring Native American students and the Indigenous peoples whose histories, cultures and contributions are part of the place we call home.
In 1976, during the nationโs bicentennial year, Congress authorized President Gerald Ford to proclaim a week in October as Native American Awareness Week. On October 8, 1976, he issued the proclamation, marking an important moment in the federal recognition of Native American and Alaska Native peoples.
Here in Los Angeles, our District operates on land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Gabrieleรฑo and Fernandeรฑo Tataviam peoples. Their enduring connection to this region reminds us that Indigenous history is not only part of our past, but also part of the present. Recognizing this history is an opportunity to help students learn about the Native peoples of this land, honor their cultures and understand the importance of their voices and stories.
