First Graders Make Memories at Pettit Creek Farms

Tolbert Elementary School’s first graders enjoyed a fun-filled field trip to Pettit Creek Farms in Cartersville! Students explored together, shared smiles with classmates, and made memories to carry with them throughout their first-grade year.

The visit was a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity, strengthen friendships, and celebrate the joy of discovering new things together!

TOLBERT THROWBACK THURSDAY | 50 YEARS • 50 MEMORIES

This week, we’re turning back the pages to 2017 and remembering a major chapter in Tolbert Elementary School history: the renovations that transformed our school.

These photos take us back to a time when Tolbert looked a little different, with construction underway and changes taking shape throughout the building. Looking back, it is a reminder of how much our school has changed over the years while continuing to be a place where students, teachers, and families have made lasting memories.

A Special Visit from the Gordon Central High School Band!

Today, our Pre-K and Kindergarten students enjoyed a fantastic performance by the Gordon Central High School Band! Our young learners were excited to experience live music and watch these talented student musicians showcase their hard work and skills.

We were especially proud to welcome back several Gordon Central band members who are Tolbert Elementary alumni. Seeing former Tolbert students return to share their talents and serve as role models for our current students made this visit even more meaningful.

Thank you to Mr. Cameron Born and the Gordon Central High School Band for taking the time to inspire our students and create such a memorable experience. We appreciate your dedication to music education and for making today so special for our Tolbert family!

October is National Principals Month, and Gordon County Schools is proud to recognize the dedicated leaders who serve our schools each day.

Dr. Rebecca Owen is in her 19th year as an educator and her 2nd full year as principal of Tolbert Elementary School. This is her first principalship, following previous roles as a teacher, coach, instructional specialist, and assistant principal.

One of the things Dr. Owen enjoys most about being a principal is working with the people who make up the Tolbert community. She appreciates the commitment of the staff, the support of families, and the energy students bring each day. She also enjoys that each day is different, bringing new opportunities to solve problems, encourage others, and help students be their best.

This year is especially meaningful as Tolbert Elementary celebrates its 50th anniversary. Dr. Owen believes the school’s long connection to the Resaca and Sugar Valley communities is a major part of what makes Tolbert special. Generations of families have attended the school, and local churches and community members continue to support students and staff.

Dr. Owen is especially proud of the way students and staff continue working through challenges and supporting one another. Their efforts have also been reflected in recent recognitions, including Tolbert being named a 2026 Georgia Title I Reward School and a 2025 Georgia Grade 3 Literacy Leader.

One message Dr. Owen wants every student to know is that they are seen, valued, and capable of accomplishing great things. She wants students to understand that growth comes from continuing to work toward being their best each day.

Outside of school, Dr. Owen enjoys spending time with her husband, Eric, and their daughters, Maddie and Abigail. Maddie is a 1st grade Warrior at Tolbert, and Abigail will join the school as a Pre-K student next year. As a family, they enjoy cruising, board games, pets, and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs. Dr. Owen also enjoys cooking, trying new recipes, and a good cup of coffee.

During National Principals Month, Gordon County Schools is proud to recognize Dr. Rebecca Owen for her leadership, dedication, and commitment to the students, staff, families, and community of Tolbert Elementary School.

📚 Pre-K Week: Favorite Character Day!

Tolbert’s Pre-K students celebrated Favorite Character Day with a special guest reader—our principal, Dr. Owen! Students enjoyed listening as she shared one of her favorite stories, adding a special memory to our Pre-K Week celebration.

Celebrating Coach Chris McConnell on National Coaches Day!

Today, we recognize Chris McConnell, Tolbert Elementary’s PE coach and assistant baseball coach at Ashworth Middle School! From the gym to the baseball field, Coach McConnell helps students build confidence, practice teamwork, and develop good sportsmanship.
