Nearly 40 district teachers and support staff were recently celebrated as they head into retirement. The group of caring, dedicated professionals represent a combined 790 years of service to our students, families and communities.

The group includes teachers, office managers, support staff, school bus drivers, custodians, administrators, and others, all of whom dedicated most of their personal and professional lives to benefit children and young people.

Thank you to these wonderful professionals for your commitment and service to our students, families, staff, and community.

Hazen High School culinary arts students in Chef Sepehr Sadrzadeh’s Baking and Pastry class wrapped up the school year by showcasing their skills through restaurant-quality plated desserts. Using techniques and knowledge they developed throughout the year, students created impressive desserts made entirely from scratch.

Their creations highlighted a variety of foundational baking methods, including the creaming, foaming, laminated dough, rubbed dough, and straight-mixing methods. The project gave students an opportunity to demonstrate the essential skills and craftsmanship that form the foundation of professional baking and pastry arts.

Congratulations Talley High School Graduates!

Congratulations to Hazen High senior Sam Lowe and Lindbergh High senior Alexis Tran who have won a National Merit Scholarship, a prestigious award for some of the most academically talented students in the nation.

National Merit Scholarships are awarded annually to high school students who earn top-percentile scores on the preliminary SAT — a standardized test many high school sophomores and juniors take. These students also must have exceptional grades, submit a strong application essay and share a recommendation from a school official, among other requirements.

Librarians from several district schools recently received books from Washington state's READ campaign, a collaborative effort between the State Minority and Justice Commission, the State Supreme Court, and the State Law Library to provide free books to school libraries. This year's theme is Belonging is Beautiful!

The fiction and non-fiction books are in multiple languages and feature individuals with disabilities, immigrants, refugees, individuals who have experienced incarceration, and characters who are just having a hard time fitting in.

• Just Shine! How to Be a Better You (and the Spanish translation, ¡Solo brilla!) by Justice Sonia Sotomayor
• We Deaf-Initely Can – Let the Adventures Begin! By Karlie Waldrip
• Taking Flight by Kashmira Shet
• We All Belong by Gianna Marino
• Good Different by Meg Eden Kuyatt

Dimmitt Middle School students recently visited nearby King County Fire District 20 (Skyway Fire) station for a special behind-the-scenes look at the fire service.

The Skyway crew enjoyed sharing information about firefighting, emergency medical services, station life, and the many ways firefighters help keep our community safe. A highlight of the visit allowing students hands-on opportunities to learn about fire safety and the tools firefighters use every day.

And who knows? There may be a few future firefighters, EMTs, or community leaders in the making!

From Classroom to Career!

More than two dozen district high school students have been offered employment at Boeing in Washington immediately after graduation.

Ten Lindbergh High and 15 Renton High seniors will use the knowledge and skills they learned in the classroom to immediately enter the Boeing Internship program which in the summer changes into full-time employment positions at the Renton plant.

Our Core Plus Aerospace courses offered at all our comprehensive high schools provide students with skills and knowledge aligned to employment needs at Boeing, which allows our students to immediately enter the work force, leading to a high quality of life. They can also take advantage of Boeing's paid college program to continue their education while employed.

This is one of many programs offered in our schools as part of Renton School District’s mission: Each student graduating with options and prepared to participate fully in our democracy.
