Rest In Peace, Ms. Bedtelyon 💜
Her obituary:
"Very sad to share that Miss Bedtelyon passed away this morning. Her cousin posted this message on Helen’s page. I’ve included it here for those who were not friends with Helen.
Helen M. Bedtelyon (March 14, 1946 – November 1, 2022) passed peacefully on November 1, 2022. Helen was residing at 1st Sunshine Park of Kenmore at the time of her death.
It is difficult to write an obituary for such a passionate human being. Many people loved and adored Helen. She was a vibrant teacher who inspired generations of students. She passed on her love of literature as well as art, theater, and music.
Mere facts cannot tell Helen’s story. She was an adventurer. She moved to Seattle after visiting a college roommate and began a new life. She was the trailblazer for the cousins. We could do anything after Helen had forged the way. I have many memories of trips and adventures with Helen. She shared her love of books, movies, food, and places. And there were many cats in her life.
Helen was born in West Branch, Michigan to Louie and Leora Bedtelyon. She lived there until the family moved to Bay City, Michigan. Helen graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in English and History. She spent her career teaching high school English, first in East Tawas and then at John Glenn High School in Bay City and Lindbergh High School in Renton, Washington. She is pre-deceased by her parents and brother, Doug. Her sister, Millie Jackson, lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Thank you to 1st Sunshine Park of Kenmore for caring for her the past four years. Also, thank you to Providence Hospice for care since August.
Helen wanted to be cremated. There is no service planned, but I hope you share your memories of her, perhaps read a passage from a piece of literature she taught you or raise a Rusty Nail in her honor.
The family requests donations to this Go Fund Me to cover Helen’s final expenses. Any excess will be donated to charity."

Notice how lifelike the flowers look. Have a lovely day!
Celebrate Plant a Flower Day with "The Flower Girl," a highly unusual subject for Ingham. Under her left arm, the artist’s girl carries a magnificent bouquet of flowers that he must have painted from life. In her right hand, she offers a potted fuchsia, the gesture emblematic of the goddess Flora. The plant itself is symbolic of frustrated love. http://met.org/1YH6QYc

FORMER NELSEN HAWKS!!! LISTEN UP!!! COME SUPPORT CURRENT HAWKS...BY BEING YOUR AWESOME SELF!!
From Sarah Day (NMS '93) counselor at Nelsen Middle School:
"Did you go to Nelsen Middle School?? If so, I'm looking for Nelsen alumni who might be interested in inspiring a new generation of Nelsen Hawks. The Nelsen counseling department is working on the first ever, Hawk Day. A day where alumni are welcomed back to share their stories about the choices they made as a Nelsen Hawk, a high school student and the journey they embarked on after HS to get where they are now.
This could be an awesome opportunity for Renton kids to be inspired to achieve by (slightly older) Renton kids!
If you think you might be interested and are available the day before Thanksgiving, then please PM or email me at [email protected] for additional details and more information!"
And guess what? If you went to Nelsen when Sarah and I did, Mr. Jones is still being awesome in the counseling office supporting Hawks too! We all know how tough it was...what were the best ways you found to navigate and be successful through that time in your life?!
