As Attendance Awareness Month comes to a close, our work continues.

For students experiencing financial hardship, something as small as a bus pass, clothes that fit, hygiene essentials, school supplies, or a class fee can become a barrier to showing up and participating fully in school.

That’s why InvestED gives school staff immediate, discreet access to funds to help remove those barriers—so students can get to school, engage in school, and graduate.

Getting to school isn’t always as simple as it sounds.

For some low-income Washington students, missing school can start with an everyday financial barrier: no bus fare, clothes that don’t fit, a lack of hygiene essentials, or another basic need their family simply can’t afford right now.

These may seem like small things. But they can become very real barriers to showing up, participating, and feeling like you belong at school.

That’s why InvestED partners with middle and high schools across Washington to provide immediate, discreet support when students need it—helping remove barriers before they become bigger obstacles.

Washington has a chronic absenteeism problem. And low-income students are disproportionately affected.

In 2025–26, 35% of Washington’s low-income students were chronically absent, compared with 19% of their wealthier peers.

Overall, 27% of Washington students were chronically absent in 2025–26—essentially unchanged from 27.3% the year before. Meanwhile, the national rate has continued to decline, reaching 23.5% in 2024 (AEI).

⭐ But behind those numbers are students facing barriers that can be surprisingly small: a bus pass, clothes that fit, hygiene essentials, or school supplies.

Removing a small financial barrier can help a student get to school, participate fully, and stay connected to their education.
