No precipitation in March, but here is a storm for April Fool's Day. Stay safe out there!

Hey there teachers! I am sharing this new lesson plan from our partners at the USGS Water Resources. The material aims to teach high school level students about the relationship between water levels and snowmelt. Actually, I know some of the adults will be interested in this material too.

According to the National Weather Service, "Incoming warm system brings rain, warmer temps and gusty winds to the region this week. Expect poor drainage flooding, rising waters in area creeks & streams, & snow sliding off roofs. Prepare now by clearing storm drains, gutters & roofs ahead of this next storm."

When you call the driest state in the nation home, it becomes extra important to know just how much water is flowing down your rivers and streams. 🥵

In Nevada and many parts of the West, water is allocated under a water‑rights system. A USGS streamgage provides the official, unbiased measurements needed to make sure each water‑rights holder receives the correct amount of water.

We recently installed a new streamgage in west/central Nevada on the East Walker River. 💧This gage will help the U.S Board of Water Commissioners know how much water is flowing down the East Walker River below the confluence of Rough Creek.

Temps are warm and flows are high this week in Northern Nevada due to rapid snowmelt.

*checks calendar* Yeah, it's still February! But it's gonna be feeling a bit like early April with highs in the upper 60s for valleys and upper 50s for Sierra communities. Enjoy the pleasant weather before another shot of showers arrives by late Saturday.

Holiday travel will be ideal as dry weather is expected thru Thanksgiving. A change in the weather pattern looks to bring cooler temps, increased winds, & better chances of showers this weekend.

Climate Central forecasts a moderate La Niña winter, which creates a more volatile weather pattern and so it’s harder to predict what type of winter Reno can get.

This means everyone should prepare for both a snowy winter and a warm winter and keep up with weather forecasts, so you’re not surprised.

Not a flood, but a great example of how Nevada's landscape can change in a short period of time.

Cooler temperatures, expansive fog, low elevation rain showers, high elevation snow, and sunrays peeking through impressive clouds have made for an extraordinary weather week here in Nevada.

A rainstorm in the Amargosa basin yesterday resulted in more water in the Amargosa River at Highway 127 near the CA/NV state line than we’ve seen in quite a while. This section of river rarely sees flow. Hydrologic technician, Kristy Benson, visited the site on November 18th and she measured the streamflow of 56.2 cubic feet per second.
