In a nutshell: we build big things and break them with earthquakes. Doesn't it sound like fun? Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES).

The Center for Civil Engineering Earthquake Research (CCEER) is headquartered at the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Reno. The center was created in 1984 and it features a $10 million state-of-the-art Large Scale Structures Laboratory specializing in the field of bridge engineering. This laboratory has four high performance shake tables with the capability of simulating l

Shake Table Project Is The Big One | ASCE 08/18/2015

We are in the process of designing a new shake table to test soil-structure interaction in our Large-Scale Structures Laboratory. The first phase of project is a $4.8M grant funded by the US Department of Energy.

Shake Table Project Is The Big One | ASCE The University of Nevada, Reno is designing a massive new shake table that will provide an unprecedented window into soil/structure interaction.

One of the current experiments in the laboratory is to test bridge columns during long duration earthquakes (here defined as earthquakes with strong shaking lasting more than 45 seconds). This video shows a shaking table experiment of a reinforced concrete bridge column tested under a long duration motion that was recorded in Tohoku, Japan in 2011.

Note that the bars inside the column begin to break and the concrete at the base of the column crumbles after many cycles of fatigue. The second half of the video shows a close up view of the column from a GoPro camera.

Earthquake in Nepal Kills Hundreds and Levels Buildings 04/25/2015

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal today, killing hundreds. It also triggered an avalanche on Mt. Everest that killed several climbers. Our thoughts are with all of the people affected by this tragedy.

Earthquake in Nepal Kills Hundreds and Levels Buildings The earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.9, shook Nepal on Saturday near its capital, Katmandu. Residents described scenes of panic and collapsed buildings, and trekkers reported a major avalanche on Mount Everest.

Last week we tested another two-span bridge. Here is a video of the final run, which shows the bridge from the side and overhead. The bridge configuration worked incredibly well; the maximum drift was recorded at 7% while the residual displacement was less than 0.25%.

Shake It Off - University of Nevada, Reno ASCE Student Chapter Edition 12/20/2014

The University if Nevada's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) won a $5,000 prize in the national ASCE music video contest. The students were asked to rewrite a popular song with lyrics about Civil Engineering and they used the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory as the topic for their video. Congratulations!
