A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal today, killing hundreds. It also triggered an avalanche on Mt. Everest that killed several climbers. Our thoughts are with all of the people affected by this tragedy.

The earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.9, shook Nepal on Saturday near its capital, Katmandu. Residents described scenes of panic and collapsed buildings, and trekkers reported a major avalanche on Mount Everest.

The University if Nevada's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) won a $5,000 prize in the national ASCE music video contest. The students were asked to rewrite a popular song with lyrics about Civil Engineering and they used the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory as the topic for their video. Congratulations!
