Hey there! It's Emily, your crazy English teacher. I came in third in the primaries last night, so I will not be continuing with my campaign for school board. I wanted to MAKE SURE to thank all of the students and staff for putting up with my craziness the last semester, on top of trying to teach and lead you. I think we all learned a lot about about the value of civic duties, voting and sticking our necks out there to run for office because of what our passions are. I hope you learned a lot, because I sure did, and I want to thank all of you for so much support.
I am not angry or sad. I am so thankful for the opportunity I took to do something that stretched me. I love all of you so much, and I think you know that!
I truly wish the best for the two candidates who made it through. Our students and community deserve the best!

Toby Wiedenmayer, all of the hard work and endless furniture you and Alissa have been moving the last couple of days need a fresh, positive reminder of why you do what you do. I am so proud of our small but mighty school! We have touched many young people in this amazing community, and the tribute that Reno Public Radio and Marcus did for us will touch your heart.
Thank you to all of the community members who helped save our school.
Congratulations to all graduates everywhere in Washoe County. Your hard work has paid off, and your graduation day will be something you will proudly remember for the rest of your lives!
Love and Gratitude for Our Students,

Melinda Blackwell, a kind and compassionate woman who used to work at Rainshadow, is doing some very important work with our students in the Social and Emotional Learning standards.
Every Friday, a small group of students goes out to her EQuus Insights farm and includes our students in working with these majestic creatures. We have seen some amazing strides in how this pays off in the classroom: students are more confident and comfortable in the classroom; they listen better and speak up with thoughtful insights; and their ability toward empathy is growing.
This picture shows one of those students with wild horses. I am very thankful to see the benefits of the work Melinda and Fran are doing in tangible ways, reflected in our students from an academic and social viewpoint.

Pacifique Niyonsenga, from Rwanda, visited Rainshadow today. His story of escape from genocide, return back to Rwanda to face homelessness, and rising out of it because of education...was incredibly inspiring. He is an artist who uses his talents to raise money to feed, shelter, and educate other kids who were like him. Check out his art event coming up on the 18th!

From our amazing couselor, who sent this letter to Ellen. The link to write to her is below. Wouldn't that be great if she were to help? If we don't ask, we'll never know! Here is what she wrote:
Due to financial concerns, our school district wants to shut down our charter school. For the district it is all about the money. For us it is about helping young people find themselves and their way in a hostile world.
Our valedictorian may be asked to return to a school she finds frightening and overwhelming: she manages anxiety and depression but fears she will be unable to manage a school with over 2000 students.
Our salutatorian went from being locked up and behind in credits to graduating early. This despite feeling alienated by family, moving out on her own and raising a child.
For 13 years, Rainshadow has helped marginalized students earn a diploma. If we close, how will one student, who feels comfortable taking out his makeup and demonstrating the latest eye shadow technique reintegrate? Or our le***an student who may finally feel like she can stop fighting reintegrate? Each student we serve has a story of strength and resilience... But to them it's just life. A life that doesn't fit the mold.
All our students have found a place where they can feel safe- a place they can be themselves and take risks learning rather than fighting to guard and protect themselves.
What we need is financial support. We have the dedicated staff, the facility, and the curriculum. This decision boils down to money, but we believe it should be about the students.
Please help us. Our students may be forced back into their overcrowded, factory model schools on January 26 without the help of someone like you.

Thank you to our community, our staff, and especially our students, for making the Board meeting an amazing event. We are small but mighty, and we are so proud of Rainshadow.
I would like to clarify a few things about this article, though I felt for the RGJ, this was better coverage than previous ones:
1) None of our teachers were "laid off."
2) "Bankruptcy" implies that we will be filing for that. This is inaccurate.
3) They implied that Toby had some sort of new or mysterious "plan" that she didn't get to the Board. These were new and powerful numbers that were just figured before the meeting and weren't available to the decision makers back in December. She will be providing them to the Superintendents.
4) There is hope, people. Contact your Trustee to express your thoughts about keeping Rainshadow open until June and beyond!
