On Friday, our upper grades Big Buddies gave the first graders their first knitting lesson. 🧶

Knitting begins in the early grades as a way to strengthen fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and focus. Learning from an older student also helps our first graders build relationships across grades and feel more connected to our school community.

For Dr. Amy Barber, one of the most powerful parts of Waldorf education is the role of story in learning.

Math, geography, literature, history and science can all be introduced through stories that help students connect with what they are learning.

That begins with fairy tales and oral storytelling in the early grades and continues with local history, biographies of scientists, thinkers and other figures as students grow.

Dr. Barber has been part of our community since 2011 and brings her background in science, education and Waldorf teaching into the classroom.

Thanks to the parents and families who came together to help prepare our school for students to return. A special shoutout to everyone who helped tackle 20 yards of wood chips! 🌱

As part of a special Waldorf tradition, every first grader received a rose from their upper grades big buddy, welcoming them into the grade school. 🌹

Thank you to all the families who helped care for our school and make these first days feel so special. We’re so happy to have everyone back.

Maeve wanted to show us her latest monkey bar moves, and Lilyclaire joined in to tell us a little more about their shared love of gymnastics and dance, and how they hope to perform together at the Pioneer Theater. 🌿

In our Early Childhood classroom, singing helps guide children through the day. Rather than relying on constant verbal instructions, songs create a calm rhythm that children naturally follow.

Music nurtures the imagination, supports emotional well-being, and helps children move from one activity to the next with ease. It’s one of the many ways the Waldorf approach creates a peaceful, joyful learning environment.

How do we learn multiplication tables?

Lili Claire and Maeve show us one of the ways our students practice their times tables. Each student makes their own rhythm sticks, and every time they can recite a set of multiplication tables from memory, they add a colored ring to mark their progress.

In the Waldorf curriculum, multiplication is built through rhythm, movement, repetition, and consistent practice. By the end of 3rd grade, students work toward knowing all of their multiplication tables with confidence, giving them the foundation they’ll use in 4th grade as they begin solving more complex mathematical problems.

It’s a simple process that helps build confidence one step at a time 🌱

Lili Claire and Maeve, our 2nd grade students, took us to one of their favorite spots on campus.

Through daily experiences in nature, children develop confidence, coordination, and respect for the world around them. Whether climbing, exploring, or simply observing, they learn how to move through natural spaces with awareness and care.
