Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School (SNACS) was granted a charter April 7, 1999 by the Washoe County School District (WCSD) as the first elementary/middle charter school serving grades K-8 in Nevada. For 18+ years, the SNACS community has provided a unique option within the WCSD. The SNACS small school community fosters personalized learning, technology, choice, parent and student engagement, and STEM all drive student achievement. Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School (herein referred to as SNACS) adopted to fulfill six federal charter school goals as required by the Nevada Department of Education and outlined in the original application to operate a charter. These include:

- Innovative Public Education
- Learning for all Children
- Progressive Curriculum
- Student Assessments
- School Accountability, and
- Professional Opportunities for Teachers

As we move forward, Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School intends to request the WCSD to approve a change based on one primary federal goal: Providing an Innovative Public Education.

As a result of the Hawk Fire and in collaboration with public safety officials, all classes, events, and activities at SNACS will be closed tomorrow Tuesday August 25th. We extend our gratitude to our first responders and firefighters keeping our school and community members safe.

In response to the Hawk Fire and its impact on our community, the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows will be opening four of our Clubhouses to help accommodate WCSD families who may need a safe and supportive place for their children during this time.

The following Clubhouses will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.:

Pennington Clubhouse
Donald W. Reynolds (DWR) Clubhouse
Neil Road Clubhouse
Carano Youth Center

As a result of the Hawk Fire and at the request of public safety officials, all classes, events, and activities at SNACS will be canceled on Monday, August 24. The decision to close schools is due to evacuations, impacts on regional public safety resources, and to help keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.

Governor Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County due to the fast-moving fire, unpredictable weather, power outages, and the closure of major roads in our area.

We understand that many people in our SNACS family are impacted. We are beyond grateful to our firefighters and first responders as they continue to battle this fire and keep our school and surrounding community safe.
