Here at Vernal Vibe Rise, we all support the circle of life: birth, growth, and death. The animals feed the plants just as the plants feed the animals.

Welcome to Vernal Vibe Rise. The animals that live here teach me more each day about how they want their lives to be; they all enjoy being outside and eating fresh grasses, nuts, and roots at their leisure. The animals love the freedom to roam the pasture, rest under the shade of great oaks, and interact with one another as they choose. I find that as I dedicate my time and energy to provide all o

f the VVR creatures--floral and faunal--with everything that they need, they, in turn, offer their best gifts to all of us. I choose to avoid artificial chemicals on this land and in my home. I do not use chemical methods to keep the animals free of worms and ticks; instead, I offer them organic garlic, black walnuts, and food-grade diatomaceous earth. Any supplemental feed is carefully chosen with an eye for quality, locality, and true nutrition, and is always GMO-free. Similarly, the perennial fruits and vegetables that grow at VVR are never treated with any artificial pesticides or chemicals. The living system produces rich compost and manure for use on the pastures and gardens. Thus, the animals feed the plants just as the plants feed the animals. Two weeks ago, my generous, Twitter-hip friend and colleague sent me this notification.

I almost fell over. Then, I finished loading the wood stove.

What an honor to have my writing recognized with a Pushcart Prize nomination. What an honor to be named by literary leader at the stellar Appalachian Review. What an honor to be saluted in such good, writerly company.

Those old-timers weren’t shy on brains. The peavey—pictured here in pink—was named for Joseph Peavey (a blacksmith from Upper Stillwater, Maine). In the 1850s, Peavey invented this eponymous logging tool as an improvement to the cant hook.

I‘ve never been much for the newfangled, which has often meant giving up on easy. But—thanks to Peavey’s imagination—I can stick to my old-time ways without re-injuring my body.
