The small town of Reliance is in Sweetwater County, a few miles outside the Rock Springs town area. The community was named after the Reliance Coal Mines. Built entirely by the Union Pacific Coal Company, the town of Reliance came into existence in the first decade of the twentieth century. It saw one housing and population boom during the mid to late 1970's. The area had a small convenience type

store near the school and a bottling company between the town and B&R trailer park. During the 70's and 80's children living in Reliance as well as in the outlying B&R trailer home park and in the more isolated country homes north of Rock Springs, near the White Mountains, attended Reliance Elementary. Some children were even living with their parents in tents and campers on the roadsides during this particular boom. The school was closed at the end of the 2003 school year. I think it was in 1976 or 1977 that my 6th grade teacher, Mr Johnson, announced that he would be marrying the kindergarten teacher. We were all so excited and happy for them. Very romantic 👍🏽. Anyone have memories they'd like to share?
