The Shunammite Woman — The Mother Who Held on to Faith

The Shunammite woman’s story is found
in 2 Kings 4:8–37 and stands as a powerful testimony of faith,
hospitality, persistence, and trust in God during deep sorrow.
Though her personal name is never recorded,
Scripture honors her through the remarkable
account of God’s work in her life and family.

She was described as a “prominent” or “wealthy” woman
from Shunem who showed kindness and
hospitality to the prophet Elisha whenever
he traveled through the area.

Recognizing that Elisha was a holy man of God,
she and her husband prepared
a small room for him in their home.
Her generosity reflected reverence
for the Lord and care for His servant.

Though financially secure, the Shunammite woman
carried a hidden sorrow, she had no child,
and her husband was already old.

Through Elisha, God promised that she would bear a son,
and in time the promise was fulfilled exactly as spoken
(2 Kings 4:16–17).

Like several women throughout Scripture,
she experienced God’s power in overcoming
barrenness and impossibility.

Yet years later, tragedy struck when her son
suddenly became ill and died in her arms.
Her response during this heartbreaking moment
revealed remarkable faith and composure.
Instead of surrendering to despair,
she immediately sought out Elisha,
determined to bring her grief
before the servant of God.

One of the most striking moments in the
Her story reminds us that genuine faith
does not deny pain.

Instead, it clings to God in the middle of pain,
trusting that He alone holds power over life,
death, and every impossible situation.

✨ What We Can Learn from the Shunammite Woman
📍Faithfulness to God is often shown through ordinary acts of generosity and hospitality.
📍God sees hidden sorrows even when others may not.
📍True faith continues seeking God even during grief and confusion.
📍Honest sorrow and strong faith can exist together.
📍God is sovereign over life and death and worthy of trust in every season.

“Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me?’”
— 2 Kings 4:28

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who continue to hold on to faith, seek God through sorrow, and trust Him in impossible situations.

Sometimes the bravest heroes aren’t the ones you expect. Sometimes they’re just kids with love in their hearts.

Last Friday, off the coast of Quindalup in Western Australia, 13-year-old Austin Appelbee and his family were enjoying a day of paddling in Geographe Bay when the ocean suddenly turned against them. Strong winds and rough seas pulled their kayak and paddleboards far from shore — into the deep, shark-infested waters of the Indian Ocean — a terrifying situation that can be perilous even for experienced swimmers.

With night approaching and no way to reach land, Austin made the courageous decision to swim for help, carrying his family’s hopes with him.

What happened next is nothing short of extraordinary.

Four hours. Four kilometers. One unbreakable spirit.

Austin first tried to paddle back on their inflatable kayak, but the rough ocean quickly caused it to take on water. Realizing it was slowing him down, he made an unthinkable choice — abandoning the kayak and even removing his life jacket so he could swim more efficiently through the choppy, unpredictable seas. For nearly four hours, he battled powerful waves and exhaustion, all while sharks are known to frequent those waters.

In interviews after the ordeal, Austin said he kept himself going with positive thoughts, uplifting memories, and prayer — focusing on love and hope rather than fear.He told reporters:

“I don’t think it was me who did it — it was God the whole time. I kept praying and praying, and I said to God, ‘I’ll get baptized, I’ll get baptized.’”

After struggling through the night, Austin finally reached land, he collapsed from exhaustion — but didn’t stop there. He summoned the strength to run over a mile to get to a phone and called emergency services. His calm and clear message set a multi-agency rescue operation into motion.

Hours later, rescue teams found Joanne and Austin’s younger siblings — his 12-year-old brother Beau and 8-year-old sister Grace — still alive, clinging to a paddleboard about 14 kilometers from shore. They were cold, exhausted, and scared, but alive.

This incredible story reminds us that even in the hardest, darkest moments, faith, courage, and love can carry us farther than we ever thought possible.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
