On Friday, May 8 the 7th Grade Reese Middle School STEAM Exploration class and the Reese High School Innovators team traveled to Kettering University to compete in Square One Education Network’s Mini Innovative Vehicle Design Challenge. We have been traveling to this event for over 10 years to compete among some of Michigan’s most talented students. We have met industry professionals, the governor, lieutenant governor, honored alumni, and other incredible educators that students otherwise may not have the privilege to cross paths with. Many of these students have never been to state of the art facilities like the Mobility Research Complex. These students designed these vehicles to climb rocks, accelerate to top speeds, handle agility and oval courses, and survive a rapid-paced pit stop. It was amazing to see them rise to the occasion. The weather was great and the competition was fierce among 50 teams in our division alone. At the end of the day the high school group came away with 2nd place in ambassadorship and the middle schoolers came away with an experience where they asked how they can do more next year. A huge thanks goes out to Reese Public Schools for supporting these kinds of programs and experiences for these amazing small town students. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
