The California Council of Cultural Centers in Higher Education(CaCCCHE) is a professional organization that strives to bring social justice educators in higher education together to: 1) network & support opportunities 2) resources; we consolidate and distribute information, data, models, and other materials relevant to higher education and particularly Student Affairs/Cultural Centers work and 3) education – serving as organization consultants to clarify and articulate issues of diversity in higher education.

Keynote: Dr. David Ga’opu Matthew Palaita (vika), is Professor and Chair of the department of Interdisciplinary Studies at the City College of San Francisco. He is also adjunct professor at the University of Washington-Seattle, in the department of American Ethnic Studies and adjunct professor in Intercultural Studies at DeAnza & Foothill College in Cupertino, CA. His Vāsā (Ocean) research project, tells the story of how Pasefika students change their schools and their educational experiences through the use of their indigenous cultures, cultural practices, and epistemologies (ocean).

Plenary Workshop: The Wakan Wiya Drum Circle is held by Two Spirit IndigeQ***r community and is open to all. Sit with us at the drum, or circle up and let the heartbeat medicine help you lay down to***co prayers/intentions for the future. This is the manda for our drum, to bring drum medicine to the people. Help us continue our work with our growing Wakan Wiya community.

Our guest facilitator Jacky Vasquez (any pronouns) is a proud Q***r Latina, and Transborder student who’s an SDSU alumni with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies. Jacky will facilitate space around Day of the Dead, honoring those who came before us in this cultural center work, and laying intentions for how to honor the lessons they provided us.

Shonté will serve the 2024-25 year as Past President. This year she will be leading the Fall NorCal Drive In and is happy to bring a renewed focus to building a cross-institutional collaboration and resource sharing with our membership.

If you’re attending the CaCCCHE Annual Summer Conference, consider signing up for this pre-conference session on DEIB Practitioners Toolkit to Conscious Supervision and Management. This 4-hour session caters to current and aspiring Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging supervisors, focusing on enhancing supervisory and management skills.

During this session, participants will:
- Reflect on personal character, values, and leadership style
- Delve into the complexities of managing and supervising DEIB staff and departments
- Evaluate current management tools to identify strengths and areas for improvement
- Distinguish between leadership and management skills, devising strategies to navigate challenges effectively

The CaCCCHE SumCon team is thrilled to announce that Dr. Gina Ann Garcia will be our opening keynote speaker at SumCon ‘24!

Dr. Garcia is a professor in the School of Education at UC Berkeley. Her research centers on issues of equity and justice in higher education with an emphasis on understanding how Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) embrace and enact an organizational identity for serving minoritized populations. She explores the experiences of administrators, faculty, and staff at HSIs and the outcomes of students attending these institutions. As an equity-minded scholar, she tends to the ways that race and racism have shaped institutions of higher education.

We look forward to Dr. Garcia discussing her work while also naming the manner in which cultural/identity centers continue to operationalize servingness. And if you know anything about Dr. Garcia, this address promises to be insightful, enlightening, fun, and offering valuable takeaways for all attendees.
