Sunday History Spotlight: Olympic Champion Bruce Harlan

One of the remarkable figures in Sequoia High School’s athletic history was Bruce Harlan, an Olympic champion who brought world-class experience to the Sequoia pool.

Harlan won gold in the 3-meter springboard and silver in the 10-meter platform at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. During his collegiate career at Ohio State, he accumulated numerous NCAA, Big Ten and national AAU diving championships before coming west and doing graduate work at Stanford.

In the early 1950s, Harlan became part of Sequoia’s Physical Education Department and helped coach its aquatic program. The yearbook photos pictured here show him with Sequoia’s boys’ gym department and identify him as Coach Bruce Harlan with the water polo team. Sequoia alumni later remembered Harlan as one of an unusually accomplished group of instructors who made the school’s physical-education program nationally noteworthy. He and fellow Sequoia coach Buck Devine even helped produce the community’s popular “Aqua Follies.”

After his years at Sequoia, Harlan became diving coach at the University of Michigan from 1954–1959. His life was tragically cut short at only 33 when he died following a fall while dismantling a diving tower after an exhibition in Connecticut.

His impact on the sport endured: in 1973, Bruce Harlan was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Swimming Hall of Fame

It is pretty extraordinary to think that an Olympic gold medalist and future Hall of Famer once coached right here at Sequoia. These old yearbook pages preserve a wonderful piece of Sequoia history. 💜🏊‍♂️
