EnCorps advocates for STEM educational equity by creating programs that reenforce our mission. “My name is Isela Villanueva (Ms. V), and I am a 9th-grade math teacher at Atlas College Prep in Santa Ana, the newest school in the Ednovate Charter network. We opened our doors on August 4, and this first year has been beyond anything I could have imagined back in 2024, when I tentatively typed “how do I get a teaching credential as an engineer?” into a search bar.

That search led me straight to the EnCorps STEM Teachers Program. After applying and being accepted as a Volunteer Guest Teaching Fellow, I was placed in a 9th-grade Algebra 1 classroom. That single semester with the students confirmed my calling. From there, EnCorps helped me navigate credentialing pathways, offered critical networking and mentorship, and even provided a scholarship toward my credential program.

My goal as an educator is to cultivate a supportive, high-expectation learning environment that fosters critical thinking, real-world connection, and a strong mathematical foundation. As a Latina in STEM who loves math, I hope to inspire the next generation to explore, innovate, and make their own lasting mark on the world.”

Classroom experience builds more than interest; it builds confidence.

Our Fellows step into real classrooms and come out changed: more confident communicating STEM concepts, more grounded in what teaching actually takes, and more connected to a path they hadn’t fully considered before.

For some, that experience deepens a spark they already had. For others, it’s the first time teaching feels like a real possibility. One Fellow came in planning to simply volunteer, and left considering teaching as a career.

Workforce development starts long before someone enters the workforce. It begins with awareness and exploration, grows through learning, and becomes meaningful through real-world experience.
This National Workforce Development Month, EnCorps is celebrating the connected systems—educators, industry professionals, schools, and community partners—that help students see what’s possible and build the skills to pursue it. By strengthening the connection between STEM education and the workforce, we can prepare the next generation to meet future demand and fuel America’s capacity for discovery, innovation, and scientific excellence. 🎒 Back to School Spotlight: Meet Johnny Nguyen 🎒

Johnny teaches engineering and robotics at Samueli Academy in Santa Ana, and he’s kicking off his THIRD year in the classroom this fall!

In his own words:

“”Although I still have a lot to learn, my exposure to students and classroom environments through EnCorps before beginning the teaching phase of my career went a long way towards preparing me for the dynamic, often unpredictable classroom environment. Back to school means back to the classroom, and for Dr. Carmen Sunico, that classroom feels a little more like home every year.

Now in her third year of teaching Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology at Crawford High School, Dr. Sunico says she feels more confident and in control than ever, and it shows in how much she enjoys her days.

“”I am truly grateful to EnCorps for not only showing me the path to becoming a teacher, but also for providing me with hands-on experience during my internship and creating lifelong connections within the teaching community.””

During the 2025–26 school year, EnCorps connected STEM professionals with middle and high school classrooms across California through its Volunteer Guest Teaching Program.

Engineers, scientists, technologists, mathematicians, and other STEM experts partnered with experienced educators to bring real-world STEM experiences into classrooms while exploring teaching as a potential career.

The result? Thousands of students gained exposure to STEM careers, schools received meaningful instructional support, and Fellows built the confidence and experience needed to make informed decisions about becoming teachers.
