🎇 Trigger Warning 🎇

For many of us, we were raised not to talk openly about money. Maybe we heard that from our parents – mine certainly called it “family business” and we didn’t talk about it with anyone outside of our family unit.

Often in our society, talking about money in general is taboo.

One of the least talked about but most needed money conversations is about financial abuse, especially for survivors. Where there is financial abuse, there may also be other types of abuse present like physical abuse, verbal abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and so many more.

Many may not even realize that the financial abuse is occurring – it may look like:

💵 Making you lend or give people your money or belongings

💵 Stealing money from you or your family

💵 Creating debt in your name on behalf of the abuser

💵 Stopping you from accessing your own bank accounts or making you share your account details

💵 Making you feel as though you don’t have a right to know any details about money or household resources

💵 Putting you on an allowance against your will

💵 Putting the cell phone or credit card bills in the abuser’s name so they can monitor activity

💵 Forcing you to cash-in, sell or sign over any financial assets you own

💵 Forcing you to sign powers of attorney so the abuser can sign legal documents on your behalf

💵 Making it hard for you to get or keep a job, or even recommending you quit so they can make the victim financially dependent on the abuser as a sole breadwinner

💵 Refusing to contribute to household or parenting expenses

💵 Persuading or deterring you from opening your own business and becoming an entrepreneur through shame-based tactics, hitting on worthiness or abandonment wounds

I'm just saying...

Happiness is an inside job.

Nothing you buy will bring it.

If you look for it outside yourself, you won't find it, in any kind of lasting or sustainable way.

The brain chemical hits from buying things are fleeting and leave you looking for your next hit.

Retail therapy isn't really therapy.

What are your behaviors with spending?

Do you use shopping to quell emotional turbulence?

Remember, don't judge yourself, and meet yourself with grace.

Awareness may not be fully curative though.
