Math Olympiad in Intermediate 1

It is this time of year again: our math circle classes are winding down, and it is time for the traditional end-of-year math Olympiads.
This is my intermediate 1, mostly grade 6. I have been teaching them for the past 3 years. How much they have matured, especially this year… and it is such a pleasure to see how much they now enjoy learning and thinking through difficult problems.
An Olympiad is very important: students work on a collection of challenging problems, and they present their solutions orally, one-on-one, explaining and defending their reasoning. So, an Olympiad needs enough judges to listen and discuss math with the students.

Thus, for this lesson, I invited two extra helpers. Taras is our math circles graduate, and Aaron is my Intermediate 3 student - his class starts right after this one. Both of them clearly enjoy the judging process. It is their chance to teach, lead, contribute, and experience math from the other side of the table

A Look Inside

Pentominoes – Junior Circle 3 (Grades 5–6)
What we did: Students identified and drew all 12 unique ways to arrange five squares side by side. After discovering these patterns, they used physical pentomino sets to construct various geometric shapes and puzzles.

Explore more interactive geometry and hands-on puzzles at Logic Land: The 8th Annual Math Festival on May 10th in Kirkland. The event features over 40 stations with logic challenges similar to these classroom activities. 🧩
